If you don’t want to go through central Madrid; take the bus. The ALSA (bus operator) website is easy to use.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Alternatives. But bus from the Madrid airport (Terminal 4) is best & fastest. The bus station in Burgos (where the bus finally stops) is right outside the city gate to the Cathedral, in other words smack in the centre of Burgos city. Long distance buses in Spain are comfortable, with toilets. And there are frequent departures from T4 24/7, so no need to rush it: Take transport/walk to T4, go to the ALSA counter, buy a ticket, and 2.5 hours later you arrive in Burgos centre. Walk to your place for the night, and then:

Buen Camino!

Toilets for which you’ll generally need a 50(euro)cent coin.

We've done both bus and train. The train station means a local bus to get from the station in Burgos, but Alsa bus from T4 is very convenient and inexpensive and drops you right in the center of Burgos. We have ridden Alsa in Spain about a dozen times now and have always had a good experience. If you've got a smart phone with data, the Alsa app is very straightforward.

Buen Camino!

If you are flying from LA, you may consider a night in a good bed in Madrid, and go next morning to Burgos. Depends on your time of arrival in Madrid.

If in stead you choose train, you should consider the following:

If you are 60+ of age, you can buy a gold card (Carta Dorada, also bought at the train station) before you buy your ticket at the train station: It will give you 25% discount on all train trips in Spain for a whole year. You owe me a beer for that tip when I find you...

Yes! I do owe you a beer or two :)
I am flying from LA but decided to head out to Burgos and explore the city for a day before my walk.

My husband and I traveling to Burgos from MAD on July 22. Do we need to buy ALSA tickets ahead on website or usually available ? Worried about if plane is late arriving at MAD missing pre-booked ticket but also want to make sure get on a bus soon after arriving (around 8 am). Any suggestions

You must do what you think is best for you. FYI, I have never pre-booked bus or train in Spain: Plans may change...

I pre-booked my ALSA ticket from MAD to Burgos this past April. My plane arrived early, but I was able to go to the ALSA booth at the airport to change my ticket for an earlier bus at no charge. By the way, I noticed that the tickets being sold online for my bus on the day of travel were much more expensive than the one I had purchased a few weeks prior even though the bus was less than half full.

Can you walk to T4 from the old terminal?
Depends on how much time you have. It's a bit of a distance. But as far as I remember, there are shuttles to take you there (bus/train). The distance from Barajas airport T2 to T4 f.ex., I believe, is ca 3 kms. I did walk once: No big deal. Not much for a pilgrim. But it is a big airport.

It is a few years since I was there the last time,, so time and age has blurred my memory a bit... :) .
