EU Parliament requests Camino Waymarkers throughout Europe

The EU Parliament has made a -- non-binding -- request, by 494 votes for 76 against, 76 abstaining -- that the network of yellow shell on blue background waymarkers be extended into the Camino routes generally throughout Europe.

Personally I think that's a great idea, but this doesn't mean it's happening.

There's also some suggestion that other "cultural routes" be given similar infrastructure, so I'd guess the Francigena routes and other Via Romea ones ?

Some efforts are being made towards that on the Portuguese Ways -- and I would be very happy indeed if the Spanish sections of the Way to Fátima were properly established.

Sounds great to me. But who is paying for it? Government orders and requests like these are only as good as the money behind them.
 
I have learned a new word today - "instar".

The article subtitle said
"Los eurodiputados han instado “a la CE y a los Estados a continuar identificando y cartografiando, también en formato digital, los Caminos de Santiago y a señalizar las rutas a Santiago de Compostela"

This seems like an aspirational goal that they can agree on, but is not any kind of implementation plan.

Completely unrelated to the topic of this thread nor to the article, but one amusing new word I came across the other day is "santiagueño" -- in a phrase "los caminos santiagueños".

There's already some noise about this idea on the trails here in Spain. Evidently they will only mark the UNESCO-recognized camino trails with this symbol: the Norte, Primitivo, and Frances. The newer, less-historic routes have to get by with what they have already, alas!

The Camino Frances started off with little more than hand painted yellow arrows on kerb stones, walls, rocks and trees. Nearly 220,000+ walking at least part of it last year. I'm fairly confident that a shortage of EU-approved mojones will not kill off the newer routes anytime soon!
 
I think it started off long before Don Elias introduced the hand painted yellow arrows.
 
Camino Way markers in Bronze
The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I far prefer the simple yellow arrow.I always find it easier to see the route if the signs are consistent and a painted yellow arrow is very easy to see.
