The route Napoleon is closed until the end of March but the alternative route via Valcarlos is my favourite anyway.

Valcarlos is the route, probably stopping there overnight as there is still I believe limited daylight at this time of year. Cannot start till after 9 am in St JeanPP

@Martin Ennis good plan. It is an incredibly steep climb from Valcarlos to Roncesvalles. Steeper than the Napoleon.

Starting so early in the year you'll be getting a camino experience many veterans haven't even had. I've loved my spring and summer caminos but there'd be something special about a winter one I think.

I am staying in Bayonne on 11th catching the first train to SJPP and heading off that morning (12th) for Valcarlos which I believe to be open.
