First time to send luggage

Time of past OR future Camino

Hello Everyone,

I just have a quick question. I plan to walk the Camino in May. I’ll be starting at SJPD. I will be sending my luggage to Casa Ivar and pick it up once I arrive in Santiago.

Do I pay Casa Ivar when I collect my luggage once I arrive in Santiago or do I make a pre payment?

Thank you :)

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
According to the Express Bourricot website, I would say you pay in advance at their office when you get there, and not in Santiago, but best contact them and ask. In any case you will need to get to their office to set up the transfer so I'm sure they will explain it there.

Prices and payment details
  • Price: 70 € per suitcase, 20kg max, transport and storage included. You won’t have to pay anything else once in Santiago.
  • To pay: in cash or in French check.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

Ivar's service is fantastic, but from SJPdP I use Express Bouricott. I'm a little nervous about mailing my luggage from France to Spain, because I've read that the process isn't as smooth as mailing from within Spain. And the Express Bouricott service is sooo easy to use. Also, you can pick up your luggage anytime you want in Santiago because it's held at a hostal with a front desk that's open 24/7. The hostal will also give a discount to Express Bouricott customers.

Hi Trecile,

Thank you for your feedback I’ll be looking into express Bouricott. I’m quite nervous about the local post office at SJPD from what I’ve read 😊

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
I love Ivar as a friend, and all he does for all of us both here in the Forum and in Santiago. But if you are traveling from SJPdP to Santiago, Express Bourricot is the way to go.

It costs €70, paid up-front, to securely ship your bag via their own van, to Albergue / Hostal La Salle at Santiago. There, it waits for your arrival in a separate, locked room.

Here is their website: http://www.expressbourricot.com/en/

Everything you need to know is explained there.

Many thanks T2andreo. I will be using express bourricot. I can’t wait to get to SJPD. I’m on my 2nd week of training. I’ve been using the treadmill with a 7.5% gradient carrying a 12.5kilo backpack for an average of 1 hour every other day aside from lifting weights. This way, when I have all my actual gear in my pack and It ways less than what I have trained for then I’ll be all set 😊

I recommend staying your first two nights at a hotel in SJPdP. The first evening you will be exhausted from traveling. The next day, you can make arrangements with Express Bourricot, and tour this delightful French town.

The citizens of this wonderful small town have been feeding, housing and equipping pilgrims heading for Santiago de Compostela for more than 1100 years. So, they have the pilgrim support thing pretty well sorted. Try to make a pilgrim Mass, at 20:00 the night before you walk. IIRC, it is held at the local church at the base of Rue de la Citadel, just before the bridge. it is on the left on your way out of town.

Start out walking the Camino on your second morning there. Use the search function, top right corner of the page, to find out information about SJPdP. You can use Booking.com to locate reservable lodgings.

Why rush...?

Great Suggestion! I’d love to explore SJPD and attend the pilgrim mass. I’m in no rush at all 😊

I’m sure my pack won’t weigh that much. Just trying to train for more rather than less to strengthen my limbs. I also plan to bring a drone and a portable nebulizer (in case my asthma is triggered).
