Forum passport ?

Just purchased passport credential from the forum site, do I still have to check in at the pilgrims office in SJPP.

It is nice to have the Pilgrim's Office stamp in your credencial as your starting point. I would check in there for sure if you are not staying in St. Jean overnight and receiving a stamp from your albergue. Also you can find out about the weather conditions for your walk over the mountain.

It's a lovely stamp and you know you're on your Way. They might even have some of these neck scarfs (non-Buff) available and you can pick your shell as well if you don't have one already.

As @marylynn says, you'll get lots of information about the Camino including weather conditions on the Napoleon Route and a list of albergues.

My wife and I did for all the reasons already described above. It only takes a few minutes and you get to be sent off by one of the wonderful volunteers. I wouldn't recommend missing it.

I couldn't see you leaving Sjpdp without peaking inside the pilgrim office - it doesn't hurt to relive the last experience a little.
Your brother ? Won't have had that experience yet tho - not to be missed.

I will call in , all those memories have to be relived in the hope it's half as great as the last one.

I have bought a pair of keen H2 hiking sandals to avoid the last catastrophic feet problems. I am torn between merino wool socks for August and 1001s what do you think?

Merino wool outer socks work in any weather.

For what it is worth, I always wear two socks when hiking. I wear Keen Targhee II, mid-height, Gore Tex lined boots.

As regards socks, my inner layer is usually a thin microfiber to wick moisture and reduce friction. I favor navy blue or black, as the liners always get grimy from walking on floors, after you remove your boots for the day, and hand washing does not get all the staining out. I also use the next day's clean pair to sleep in the night before if my feet are chilly.

The outer sock layer is ALWAYS the thickest merino wool socks that my boot sizing will accommodate. I am an avid Smart Wool (brand) fan.

The issue is not warmth, your feet are going to sweat in most any weather you would walk a Camino in. The issue is cushioning. In my view, more is always better. The merino wool provides excellent cushioning, washes easily, dries reasonably fast, and wears a long time. it is is also widely available, worldwide.

I don't have experience of 1001s. I stick with merino. You will have sandals tho, you say. So your feet will breathe. You'll know yourself if your feet start to feel too hot. Just stop and whip the socks off and cool down a while and start again. A break can make a big difference.
