How to get Compostela noted for Camino walked in memory deceased relative (in vicarie pro)

Hey everyone,

Really grateful for some advice.

I recently completed my Camino Frances, and will now walk on Finisterre, then Muxia from tomorrow.

Like many others, I walked my Camino in memory of a deceased relative, in this case my mother who passed away last August. I was sure to ask about my Compostela being noted to reflect this intention. However, there was some confusion in the Pilgrims Office within Santiago, and whilst I eventually got my Compostela noted, it was done so in pen, once printed.

I am very grateful for this but, as I’m likely to frame the certificate, I wonder if the addition of my mum’s name should have been printed. I just want everything to be perfect and, as I have the opportunity to revisit the pilgrims office next week, can request a replacement.

Additionally, there was no option to have my mum‘s name added to the more detailed certificate, noting the start point and distance travelled. Is this right?

The new system of Compostelas with the name and date printed rather than filled in by hand has only been in place for a few months. In the past it has been normal practice to have any "vicarie pro" dedication added at the bottom by hand. I think that is still the usual custom though perhaps someone who has asked for it more recently knows better. It has never been the pilgrim office's practice to add a "vicarie pro" dedication to the distance certificate - only the Compostela.

There is no provision to have your mother's name added in print, in the same font. It can only be handwritten underneath 'In Vicarie Pro'.

Only your own name, you who has walked, can go on the distance certificate.

I walked for my three brothers and when I asked for that to be noted, I was told it couldn't be added to the Compostela but could be to the second document, which it was.

I was wondering if they print the names in Latin at the Compostela or is it now your own name ?
Being volunteer and “ handwriter “ last year we could convert almost every name in Latin We had an extended list of names in the computer in front of us.


your name eg John = Ioanem is written in latin in the accusative case because in latin and the name is part of the text , in this case of the latin text of the Compostela.

If your name is fed by registrating into the computer , the computer should convert it automaticly. Just curious how it goes by now with printed Compostelas.

Just a note regarding your name in Latin. I have 15 Compostelas, all of them hand written with my own name but one year I had a French volunteer who took ages to complete the Compostela. When I asked him what the problem was he said that he couldn't find a Latin equivalent and that he was going to put down a name that, in his opinion, would be appropriate. I said no way, I didn't want some random name on my Compostela just to have it in Latin. He finally conceded after much debate

As above, it’s a handwritten annotation and sometimes takes a bit of persistence as it’s not a frequent request and the volunteers on the desk might not be familiar with it.

I had been advocating automated production of Compostelas and Distance Certificates for several years, when I worked as a volunteer. I have worked there every summer since 2014 - except for the COVID lost year of 2020.

Last year, they started collecting advance submissions of "estadillo" (statistical form) information from pilgrims, via the internet, before they arrived at Santiago. It looks like they have at least the first part of the process sorted out.

This year, they finally took the next big step, and linked advance submission of information to rapid machine printing of Compostelas and Distance Certificates, based on the information submitted ahead of time.

This process improvement allows the steady-state staffing available, to handle abrupt surges in pilgrim documentation demand. This provides better service, with less waiting, and a better final product. A real "win-win."

Since the Easter holiday, the Pilgrim Office has seen repeated, sudden, daily surges of thousands of extra pilgrim arrivals daily. The primary complaint, reported to me, has been that the queue moves so fast that arriving pilgrims have not had time to use the restroom before being called to receive their certificates. Not too bad a result, at least IMHO.

This year during my volunteer service, I was planning to push for adding a "Vicare Pro" tick box, and a pop-up for explanting the additional request, and for inputting the the desired name. Unfortunately, my wife's very serious illness caused me to cancel my volunteer assignment and trip to Spain this year. I must remain home to take care of her.

But, I have not forgotten this. Perhaps, someone else will stumble on to this useful add-on to the new process.

Hello friend, well done on doing that honourable walk. Consider putting your mum’s name onto it yourself. It’s your certificate, you earned it. It’s doesn’t become less a thing for you to put her name on it, perhaps even more a thing in that you took agency to ensure her name is on it. Just a thought buddy. Cheers, Keith

My name was printed in English this time , not Latin.
