I would like to add that some new people post their first questions in the "Announcements / Your Feedback" or "Frequently Asked Questions" sections.

These are moved (as are any threads obviously wrongly placed) to the correct section and generally the original thread is left as a shadow in the original section (indicated by the blue arrow to the right of the thread title) for at 7-14 days after which the shadow is removed as we hope by then people will be looking for it in the right place.

Please put your first post in the Pilgrim Introductions forum or the forum most relevant to your question.

Ivar,
I am having difficulty figuring out how to post a new topic; the layout seems to have changed, and I do not see the spaces in which to insert the subject and then the message itself. I also inadvertently duplicated your first post as a reply! Sorry about that. Can you perhaps post some instructions for the new layout of the forum?
Thanks,
Frank

Hi Frank. You need to log in, go to the relevant section of the forum you want to post your question in, and then click a blue box halfway of the screen to the right that says 'New Thread'. The upper box on the new screen allows you to type your subject, the lower box is for the question itself. Good luck!

Thanks, NoovanderVeen. Ivar also gave me this advice. I just returned to the forum in question and tried again, and this time, for whatever reason, it worked! So I have posted my new thread. The mysteries of computers . . . Thanks for your help.

I was able to post a question the other day and answer other questions but today I don't see a button that say "post a question" it says I have insufficient rights to post - what does that mean? I cant post questions anymore, I don't see a post a question button on my page any more. I use standar IE browser.

#7
I still cant find the blue box - when I scroll down it says "You have insufficient privileges to post here" - Please help. I am leaving for the Camino tomorrow and I start walking Tuesday, it would really help to post questions on the Camino Forum that's what its for right? but somehow it wont allow me to post as I don't see the button that says "new thread" please help.

I give up - I've tried on Google Chrome, MAC and I cant post a new thread on this forum. It says I have "insufficient privileges". I dont understand how I could post a brand new thread last week and this week I cant post. Are my rights taken away, did I do something wrong? When I really need the forum to help me with a question as I am leaving in less than 14 hrs to Spain. This is not helping! Any help will be appreciated.

For some reason, I'm once again having the problem that Travel Diva reports. I've tried posting in Chrome and Safari, but I can't see the "new thread" button any more. I finally just found the most closely analogous thread and replied to the last post in it, to pose my question.

Hi there,

Not sure if I understand what you mean... many of the posts today are in threads that has been started a while back, but the latest post is from today (and hopefully no repeat posts).

Could you send me some links as examples?

Thanks!

Hi Ivar, we can not for the life of us find this "post new thread" button. Are yòu having issues with the site?
Thanks, Hiker Lady.
The 'Post New Thread' (in a browser) or 'New Topic' (in Tapatalk) is only active if you are in the section where you want to make the post. It isn't active if you are searching, eg viewing 'New Posts' or 'Recent Posts'. The instructions at the head of this topic should be followed exactly if you are using a browser.

In Tapatalk (at least on an Android device) tap on the Camino arrow in the top left corner until you get to the home menu. It will have a browse option near the bottom of the screen. Select that and you will see a selection of the seven major areas of the forum. Select the one you need and you will then get a list of topics. Select the one you want. When you do, you should see the a selection 'New Topic' at the top of the screen with a pencil icon. You may find there are sub-topics at this stage.

Sample sequence to create a new thread about GPS devices would be:
  1. tap the Camino icon (top left) until the main menu with a 'Browse' option is displayed.
  2. tap Browse
  3. GPS is a topic that will relate to all routes. Tap the Pilgrim Topics Related to All Routes selection
  4. You might expect GPS to be an equipment topic. Tap the Equipment Questions selection
  5. At this stage, you should be able to create a New Topic (at the top of the screen), but you will find a sub-topic here labelled GPS and the Camino de Santiago. Select that.
  6. You can now tap on New Topic, and an entry screen will appear for your question or contribution.

Sometimes the forum signs you out, and you need to sign in again with the same username and password you created when you singed up. Try that...

It seems like Safari on the iPad has some problems loading the full page (with box to write in). For the iPad I would then suggest two options:
1) Download the "Camino Forum App"from the Apple App Store (free) and use that.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/camino-de-santiago-forum/id592708918?mt=8
or...
2) Download Google Chrome for the iPad and see if that works.
..or use a computer...

I hope the next update of the forum software fixes this..

Saludos,
Ivar

It's most probably your app. I had a strange one when using my iPad recently, I would get to read one message and then it would jump out of the form and i would have to go in again. I continued to groan for a few days and then went to my apps, then to 'updates' - the forum was there. After I ran the update on the 'camino forum' I had no problems. Modern technology hmmm.

Love the forum though.

Hi Gracie,

Did you fill in the "title" and the "question/comment" box? To submit a new posts you need to fill out both fields (very much like an e-mail message).

Hello Ivar,

On my ipad I use the Google Chrome Browser (look for it in the app store) and it works fine. An alternative might be the Camino de Santiago Forum "App" (also in the app store).

The Safari browser (the default browser on the ipad) has some problems....

I hope this fixes it! :)

Hi Jan
This may help or further confuse, as I am on the iPad and 'see' a different view to PC, I think.

Try: search for place you want to post- ie misc topics, live from Camino or. Cf etc
Then: I see. 3 dots on the top right of my screen like this. . . .
Then: hit those
Then: I see then a selection, which includes. ' New Topic'

Hope it helps

Yolanda, you have to click on the blue tab top left that reads "Camino de Santiago Forum" - it acts as a "reset" botton and gives you all the major categories of topics in which you then post your new thread. You would do the same thing if you wanted to read about different Caminos for example.

When you log in, you automatically end up in the "most common" or 'most recent" threads. Hope this helps. I also looked and looked and looked before I got it.

Tagging posts is optional, but if you choose to add a/more than one tag just write them separated by commas. As posts get tagged they will create lists of topics related to the same tag.

For some examples of tags that already have been used, see at the bottom of each page:

This should not happen, but it might be related to the update we did yesterday on the server.

Question: What is the web browser that you are using?

We will look into this and try to fix it.

Thanks!

Ivar like @annelise I have a similar problem with some pages, 'certificate error' without the red bar. I simply click refresh and the page then loads. It is also proving difficult to upload images. I use Firefox as a browser but I did wonder if it might be the anti-virus that causes the alert.

Hola Ivar. How do you turn off email for alerts? I'm here most days anyway, no point in cluttering up the inbox. Can't find anything in my account/profile to do it. Gracias.
You would go here:
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/account/preferences

...and uncheck the "Receive email notifications" on the various options listed.

Note that you may be already "watching" (subscribing with email notification) to older threads. You can go here:
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/watched/threads
..and see a list of them. If you would like to unwatched these you need to click on each of them and click the "Unwatch thread" (towards the top right of each thread).

I hope this helps!

Yes, thanks. So with the older threads, you can't opt out of email? That's ok.

Another question. I've turned off prescriptive text and auto correct on the iPad. It's stopped bugging me in email, but on this site it persists. In fact, if I type something it doesn't like, it highlights the offending word and tries to block me from typing anything else until I accept one of its suggestions. Maybe I should be asking an Apple forum, just that it only happens here. OTOH, I don't do social media. Could be a problem elsewhere for all I know.

Yes you can, but you need to do it one thread at a time (by UnWatching it).

Yes this is an apple question since it is the iPad doing this (not the forum). Try to google "turn off auto correct ipad" and see what comes up.

This question comes up once in a while, so here we go:

Step 0) Sign up (free) and log in.

Step 1)
Go to the forum homepage:
http://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/

Step 2) Scroll down and find the section where your question /comment belongs. (If it about the "Camino Frances" in that section, if it is about Equipment then in that section)
Ivar, May I suggest inserting between 0 and 2
#) Check the FAQ page. There are 45 collections answers to questions.
It's nice to read the existing wisdom before asking.

Could I also ask, for those of us who use the Search function to find threads by their titles, that it would be very helpful if those starting a new thread made the effort to spell the title of the new thread properly (accepting that there is no one standard English). I want to be able to search out the wisdom of previous threads and not waste anyone's time. The wild spelling of new thread titles and misspelling of older thread titles found by accident suggests why I sometimes cannot find a useful older thread. (I know I'm dating myself, but spelling used to be very useful).

Are there particular words you find misspelt? The moderators can alter the names of threads to correct this if necessary.
I managed to locate a thread on plantar fasciitis without the double "i" in the thread name. As a medical term, I can quite understand why this may be difficult to spell. I am getting better at guessing how a misspelling may occur. I was needing some help with this issue.

Quoted from the instructions:

Add your Start date to our Camino Calendar. 1) Start a new Thread about your Camino plans 2) After thread has been created, select "Thread Tools" above your post (over to the right). Then select "Calendar Add". More instructions here.

Just click the blue links and all becomes clear ;-) Hope that helps and Buen Camino, SY

Ivar,
I am having difficulty figuring out how to post a new topic; the layout seems to have changed, and I do not see the spaces in which to insert the subject and then the message itself. I also inadvertently duplicated your first post as a reply! Sorry about that. Can you perhaps post some instructions for the new layout of the forum?
Thanks,
Frank
I agree, I am trying to ask a simple question and I can't seem to find a "thread."

If you are trying to ask a question go to the forum which is relevant - let's say the Camino Frances forum - there is a large blue button "Start a new Thread" on the right near the top of the page above all the already existing threads. Press the button and go ahead.

Maybe before you start a new thread look and see if one already exists. There is a Frequently Asked Questions forum or alternatively use the search button at the top right of each page and respond in a relevant thread. You can search within a forum or generally and limit the search as below:
  • Search titles only
  • Posted by Member
  • Newer Than
  • Search this forum only
  • Display results as thread

Hi there,

The "Valid post" error might be if you forget to enter a subject for your message. It is requited, and it will give you an error if you try to start a new thread withoiut a subject line.

Your 2nd error does not sound familiar to me. Try adding the subject line and see if that fixes it.

You can send a private message to Ivar or any member.

Click on the picture of Ivar (or any other member) next to his post and a new tab will appear on the middle of the page. In blue to the right of the tab is "Start a Conversation"

Click on that and give your message a title and write whatever you want to ask him.

Finally click the "start a conversation" button at the bottom of the page.

Hi Ivar, I am a new member on this forum and not very tech savvy. I did finally manage putting up a thread, but not sure if it should have been a post. I don't really know how to decide which to use. My main question at the moment...my profile avatar picture is showing up with a green mark in the upper left hand corner. I am curious what this means as it was not there originally and if I tap the picture to enlarge it, the green mark dissappears. Thank you for any info about this.

When I hover over that green mark I get a pop up that you are online now. I had never noticed it before. As far as commenting on a thread or starting a new one - if you just want to add to the already ongoing conversation of a thread, just reply to that thread. If you have a new question, start your own.

The green mark shows who is online. Somewhere in the settings and preferences you can choose to disable that, if you don't want your online status to be shown.

Yes, there is a lot of settings that you can change here (look in the menu to the left):
https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/account/

The general rule is that if you are joining an ongoing thread (conversation) you should post a post in the thread that has already been started. If you have a brand new question, then you should create a thread.. that people then later will post their post to... Not sure if that was more confusing.... :)

Thank you, Ivar. Hopefully with more practice I'll be humming along nicely on this forum navigating all the many options! In the meantime I'm sure I will be stumbling along for awhile.
