In my experience (April 2012), there is much less English spoken on the Chemin Le Puy.
Having said that..you can get by but you will have a bit more of an adventure.
You can have the Gite owner call ahead for you each night and be able to book the next nights Gite....or you can do what I did and hook up with another French speaking pilgrim.
I speak no French. We traveled through France by car for about six months a few years ago without any French. We got by pretty easily with sign language and smiles even tho we were in rural villages most of the time.
Don't worry too much about it. The camino is pretty straight forward and everyone can help you work out what you need.

When you get to Spain...English will be the default language of the pilgrims. Europeans often speak English as a 2nd language. You will have no problem in Spain.

Hi....Dont worry! The French are wonderful, make the effort with a Bonjour and Merci, your halfway there.......Cheers Vicr
