I know that walking poles are not generally accepted on airplanes. What about hiking umbrellas?

The discussion on poles is long and complicated, and often generates more heat than light. Hence the thread at the link I provided.

I find that most airlines I use reflect the dangerous goods guidance from their national civil aviation safety/security authority, but might have dimensional constraints. You will need to do your own research on this.

For international flights, things become more complicated, and it is best to find out from the airline(s) you are booked with what restrictions are going to apply.

Since the title of this is "lightweight hiking umbrella", I'm going to jump in. My Sea to Summit umbrella is 9 oz, the lightest I could find. Anyone find a lighter one that won't turn inside out at the first breeze? Thanks!

You can buy slightly lighter umbrellas from Gossamer Gear, Zpacks and others. I'm fairly certain that they are all made by Euroschirm.

Gossamer Gear: 6.6 ounces! But decided to find 3 ounces to drop elsewhere and keep the 9 oz sea to summit hiking umbrella. This really does start to be a ridiculous obsession....

I have owned two Euroschirm umbrellas. The first one was the Telescope Hands Free model which is pretty heavy, but provided invaluable shade on the Meseta.

I decided to try a lighter one, and bought the Light Trek Ultra (6.2 ounces), which I could never get to be as stable attached to my backpack as the umbrella that's made to be handsfree.
Two of the ribs snapped at the first gust of wind on the Meseta, and I eventually tossed it in a bin.

I still have the Telescope umbrella.

I, too, had a Euroschirm but it got stolen on one of the early Caminos!

Yes, umbrellas are permitted in the airplane cabin. I took mine last year.

Both are permitted in checked luggage. I did carry on with an umbrella last year however I was gifted a pair of poles on the Camino - so I had both coming home. Coming home I decided to go ahead and check my luggage. The umbrella and poles did not fit inside my bag - so I paid for the wrapping service that is provided at many airports. They roll clear plastic wrap around your bag several times and it is quite secure once they are finished. That took care of ensuring the umbrella, poles, straps, and any items that may have been in the outer pockets of my bag were all securely enclosed within the wrap.

Gossamer gear. I have both. I brought the gossamer gear one - but I might have used the sea to summit attachments to strap the umbrella to my pack.

If you want a really lightweight umbrella Montbell has models between 3 oz/86 gm and 7.1 oz/200 gm

I have this Six Moons umbrella too, it is awesome, feels really solid using it with a breeze (I had it up in a blustery rain shower today it today near home), great size and so light. The downside is how long it still is when folded down, but I just attach to the outside of my pack and will be able to pack it carefully inside when I fly to Spain.

I have a Helinox that weighs 7 oz. It is also very strong - I've used it in strong winds, occasionally it will blow inside out but snaps back with apparently no damage.

Thanks for this suggestion! It would cut my umbrella weight by 2/3. Is there anyone on the Forum that has used the Montbell umbrellas? It looks like there are 3 good options: 20 dernier cloth that weighs 5.3 oz and folds to 9.8 inches, 10 dernier cloth that weighs 4.3 oz and folds to 9.4 inches or 7 dernier cloth that weighs 3 oz (!) and folds to 9.1 inches. I'm expecting a bit of sketchy spring weather but if anyone has used the 3 oz version and it works, could you please share? Thanks!
