madrid airport to pamplona

OK, I've been trying to research how to get from the airport in Madrid to Pamplona. I think bus is the way I want to travel to Pamplona. Can someone tell me exactly how to accomplish this (getting from the Madrid airport to Pamplona by bus)? Thanks!

Hi, johnnyman,

You have two choices, depending on your schedule. You can get a bus at the T4 terminal of Barajas that will go to Pamplona (with a change in Soria, but changing buses in Spain is usually a piece of cake). Or, you can get a bus at the Avenida de Americas big bus station. Many of the buses to Pamplona leaving from Avda. Americas also stop at Barajas T4, but not all do. If you wind up going to the Avda. Americas bus station to get the bus, it's very easy to do. You can hop on the Madrid bus line #200 and it will take you straight there. Avda. Americas is on the northeast side of Madrid and to the airport.

The Avenida de las Americas is a big street in Madrid. It is also the name of a big bus station, which,not surprisingly, is right on that street.

There are buses leaving from Barajas (you will have to get to T4 if you don't land there) that take you straight to the bus station. It's Madrid bus #200.

I flew from Madrid to Pamplona as a continuation of my flight from the USA. Quick, cheap and easy. Took the airport bus into town.

Isn't there a train that will take you from Madrid to Pamplona???

Yes of course there is, check the RENFE website, but if you look at the first post, you'll see that the writer was looking for information on buses.

Are there any advantages of taking bus instead of train? I too need to go to Pamplona from Madrid airport, and I thought I would take a Renfe train.

I am not a fan of bus travel, so I try to fly or take a train at the start and end of the camino.

But here are the other things that you might want to weigh.

--Which is closest to where you arrive in Madrid? From the airport terminal T4, you can get right on a bus, so that means you don't have to even go into Madrid. But of course you may want to go into Madrid to spend a day or two in that lovely city.

-- Look at the schedules and figure out which works best for your arrival time.

--Bus costs a lot less than train usually, unless you get a cheap online fare or unless you're over 60 and can buy a tarjeta dorada and get a good discount.

Taking the train is really a piece of cake, especially if you arrive in T4 (which you will if you are flying Iberia or one of its code share partners, namely American and BA). You can take the Cercanias commuter train to the Atocha train station, which is quick and easy.

If you are flying with Iberia ( and I guess, with one of their partner airlines) you can get a VERY cheap continuation flight to Pamplona. Works out much cheaper than bus or train. Anne

Anne's made a great point. I flew American Airlines into Madrid this May, then flew on to Valencia on Iberia. Coming home, it was Santiago - Madrid-Chicago and the added cost of those little puddle jumpers was minimal. And there is great peace of mind in knowing that if your return ticket starts in Santiago, any delays or changes are not your problem, they will take care of it for you. Which is of course not the case if you miss your plane in Madrid because your train from Santiago was late.

Annakappa and peregrina2000 made to think more about my plan. Originally planned to fly into Madrid and take train to Pamplona. Then take a train from Santiago to Madrid and fly out of there. This plan includes 3 days of sight seeing in Madrid of I complete my journey as recommended time (33 days from sjpdp). Any delay would eat into my stay in Madrid where I have never been before.
If I use Iberia to Pamplona and from Santiago, will I still have this stop over in Madrid? Also, how do I make reservation? Make reservation as if I have two one-way tickets or buy those two segments when I arrive at Madrid?

Hoping you get some help on your question as I am thinking of doing the same thing this spring. JFK to Madrid to Pomplona to SJPDP then Santiago to Madrid to JFK return...
