My walk for Epilepsy

I have two weeks before embarking on a journey that I never dreamed would be possible.

As a sufferer of epilepsy for most of my life, I am looking to raise awareness of epilepsy in New Zealand and Australia. To achieve this, I am going to walk 800kms across Spain on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, commencing 12 June 2006.

With the help of many wonderful people, including my father Wayne Bailey, I am able to make this dream come true. The journey will cost approximately $5000, half of which I will personally provide, with the other half gained through sponsorship. I am raising funds through a per kilometre sponsorship and I am offering a 50/50 split of the proceeds with the Epilepsy Foundation of New Zealand and The Epilepsy Association of Australia.

My biggest fear is the plane journey. I have seizures when I am tired and when I have just woken up from a nap. As I will be on more than one plane for at least 20 hours, this ‘broken sleep’ raises my chances of having a seizure. But with the support of the plane crew, I’m sure I will be fine.

I am naturally nervous and excited, and time sometimes moves too slowly and sometimes too fast. I don’t think it will really dawn on me until I am actually inside the airport on the day of departure. My friend Pania Robinson who is my support person, will be meeting me in Barcelona, and when I spoke to her on Sunday, I started realising that I was actually going to walk the Camino de Santiago!
