Newbie walking camino from Sarria to Santiago in middle of May

Time of past OR future Camino
May 19-24th, 2014
Hi fellow pilgrims :
Sometimes opportunities for your bucket list to get checked off arise and that just happened today. I am excited and nervous since I will be traveling solo. I have a limited amount of days and am planning on starting from Sarria to Santiago around May 19th. I was wondering if it is reasonable to do the camino by the 23rd or 24th? I am going to visit my family in London and Valencia but have these days free to travel. If I plan it correctly, I will be arriving to Santiago on the 18th and travel to Sarria on the 19th to start the Camino. I am looking for a place to hold my 1 luggage in Santiago for these days so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated as well as any recommendations or recommended threads for albergues to stay at while doing the Camino from Sarria. I look forward to reading all the forum has to offer since I am a newbie at this too. Thanks and happy travels to all

Hello hello.....

I am in the Camino right now as I am typing this message. I'm supposed to be on my 4rth leg of the walk when my ankle became swollen.

I have started in Sarria too and yes before this ankle became swollen, was planning to finish the walk for 5 days.Today will be a rest day for me and hope to resume tomorrow. So if my ankle holds through....the whole Sarria to Santiago walk will be a total of 6 days.

I am using and following John Brierley's guidebook by the way.....

All the best with your planning!

I guess it's good to have one or two extra days for some unexpected occurrences.....

Buen Camino!

Hi dytzs_pilgrim:
I was just reading your thread about starting your camino today from Sarria and I received your message at the same time. Sorry to hear about your ankle but I am sure the rest will be beneficial.Thank you for suggesting the extra days and the guidebook. I think I may have to leave a day earlier so I can have a full extra day and a half. I wish you a Buen Camino, a great bday and a healed ankle.

Thanks....I do hope to resume hike tomorrow ! Being stranded in a lovely town is a blessing though. Relaxing day today and the sun is out! I couldn't ask for more!

So sorry about the leg! I'm routing for you, and I hope you're able to get walking soon. Enjoy some time off with lots of Vino Tinto. Its a great healer!

Thanks Cheynee.... Ankle is not that swollen now... Been elevating it plus cold compress and bandage seems to be helping a lot..,.and oh some anti inflammatory tablets and cream too! I really hope I can resume tomorrow.

Thanks all!

If you take a long last day(40km) you can do it in 4 days, stopping at Portomarin, Palas do Rei and Arzua. If you arrive late to Sarria, there is a nice albergue some km from Sarria at Barbadelo.

Thanks Randi, this might be my saving grace if I don't get one extra day off at work! The flights that I have seen take me into Santiago by midnight bc I leave London after 4pm and its via Madrid. I have been looking at the schedule for buses to Sarria that night but no luck. I am going to research A Coruña instead of Santiago as an option as well. Thanks again !

Hello fellow pilgrims!!!

I have made it in Santiago yesterday! I pushed to walk the last 38 km stretch despite my bad ankle! What a journey it has been but very overwhelmed by the whole Camino experience! Met several great people along " the way"....and so humbled by the whole experience. Thank you all for journeying with me! Truly the Camino spirit lives on!!!

Buen Camino all!!!!

Hi Petitza, it's in my bucket list to do the Camino. Time is factor here and this is why I'm doing the shortest route from Sarria to Santiago. Who knows maybe in the future I may do the longest route . I would love to hear your experience. I'm planning to do it in May of 2015. So your experience will really help me prepare. Thanks and god bless and good luck.

Buen Camino

Thanks for the positive vibes. I also would love to do the longer route but this is my first time that I do a hike for more than one day so I thought it be best to be take it one bucket list at a time. I will be sure to post about my experience. Many blessings for your preparation as well.
