Orange Peels on the Camino

I'm walking my Camino right now. Started in SJPdP on May 5. One thing I've noticed everywhere I go is orange peels on the trail. People sit down on a flat rock along the way, peel their orange, then just leave the peels right there on the ground. I've discovered something in my time on the path. If you put your orange peels in your backpack and carry them to the next trash can, it makes the stuff in your backpack smell fresh and fabulous AND you're not leaving anything other than your footprints, your energy and a stone or two from home along the way. Try it!

Buen Camino! Ultreya!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
At least orange peel, and apple cores, are biodegradable. Plastic bottles and food wrappers littering the Camino are another matter entirely.

Transport luggage-passengers.
From airports to SJPP
Luggage from SJPP to Roncevalles
Citrus peel is unsightly and takes ages to breakdown so visually it's still litter.
Best to pack it out.
I was surprised how little litter there was in April

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
For years and years I simply can not understand many people's logic of walking for miles with let's say 0,5l (= 0,5kg) plastic bottle filled with water and when it's empty it obviously become so much heavier that they simply throw it away. It's the same with orange peels or bocadillo wrappers :?

Couldn't agree more-- organic waste is still waste. Pack it out!

Though I'd love to see albergues with composting bins, as it does seem a pity to put organic waste in a landfill where it has no hope of breaking down.

Thank you Callea! Brilliant post : )

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
I will start my Camino in June 8, from Pamplona. I will keep it in my mind. Buen camino amigos peregrinos.

If every pilgrim would take a small plastic shopping bag and fill with the rubbish that litters the Camino it would be very fast clean again Just an idea ...

If every pilgrim from the forum took a plastic bag, there would still be about 180,000 pilgrims without them.
