If we stay the night at Orisson, and then the next morning Napoleon's Route is closed, do we have to hike all the way back down to pick up the Valcarlos route?

A selection of Camino Jewellery
I would seek advice from the pilgrim's office in SJPDP before setting out for Orisson. Not much point in staying there if you are going via Valcarlos - you would be better to stay in Valcarlos. They are alternatives. Having said that I believe transport can be arranged from Orisson to Valcarlos if there is sudden bad weather.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Whatever the month when you start DO visit the Pilgrim Office
in SJPdP before you set off!

Located on the camino at 55 rue de La Citadelle the office is open every day and in season from early in the morning until late at night ie after the arrival of the last bus/train. The helpful volunteers can provide you with a Credential, stamp, list of albergues as well as current weather and trail conditions. It is also a great spot to meet and greet other pilgrims.

We posed this very question to the proprietor of Orisson and were told that transportation to Valcarlos would be arranged. We never got to Orisson because the Route Napoleon was closed even before we left SJPP, however, in our dealings with the proprietor we felt assured that Orisson would look after its pilgrims if the weather turned bad while they were there.

This is the answer we got from Orrison asking the same question :
"We make a refund if there is snow beetwen St Jean and Orisson.
If there is snow at the top but you can reach the refuge we will bring you by car the next morning on the alternative road by valcarlos."
Buen Camino!

Absolutely! My French friend was told much the same when she spoke on the phone with Jean Jacques, the proprietor. And we got a full refund, no problem.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
