Pelgrims from Czech Republic?

Time of past OR future Camino
Vezelay
Hello everyone,
I've been browsing this forum for a while now, and it's been incredibly helpful in planning my Camino journeys (so far, I've done Vézelay, Frances, and Portuguese, and tomorrow I embark on the Primitivo!).

I have a somewhat unconventional question for this forum, as it's not related to the Camino. In August, I'll be immigrating to the Czech Republic to start my PhD project in České Budějovice. My salary will be modest (approximately 25,000 CZK per month (after tax), which is roughly 1,000 euros). This would be not enough to live by in the Netherlands, where I currently live.

While I understand that living costs in the Czech Republic are generally lower than in the Netherlands, I'm starting to feel a bit anxious about making ends meet. Are there any forum members from the Czech Republic who can provide insight into whether 25,000 CZK per month is sufficient to cover living expenses?

For the members that are not from the Czech Republic; tomorrow I will arrive in Oviedo. I am doubting to whether to walk the Norte (last part) or the primitivo. Any suggestions?

Thank you and kind regards!
Janus

Hello @JanusDT
One of our forum members, @SYates lived in the Czech Republic for quite a time. Perhaps you could send her a private message with your questions. She is based in Santiago de Compostella now...

Not that helpful in the end but I asked a friend who lived in Czechia until a few years ago and this is his response:

I don't know, lots of variables here. My good friend tells me prices have risen greatly, new construction products, etc. However, I think rest of Czech still very reasonable prices. Especially for beer, haha! I don't know, for a student, I'm sure. Depends on person, but yes Czech still good value, compared to most Euro countries.

@JanusDT , a friend of mine from Czech republic ( ironically we met on the Primitivo last year) just got back to me about your salary. Her reply:

"Well it depends on the circumstences- if you have to pay a rent,if you live alone or with someone, in a big City or in a village.. but i think you can live with that, but no big luxury."

She went on to say that it wasn't that great and she personally wouldn't take it, however I appreciate that as you're just doing your PhD you're in a different situation to her.

Good luck!

Hello @JanusDT
... there are several camino trails passing through Czech Republic -perhaps you have already discovered them? In between your studies they might be somewhere to explore. I followed the Zittau Camino from Prague to Görlitz on my way to Poland in 2015. It was a lovely experience...

Super cool, I did not know. Thanks!

Hello again.
...as I was following the Zittau Camino through the green belt of Prague and into the countryside, I came across several volunteers pruning fruit trees. They told me about a wonderful initiative to map out all the wild and abandoned fruit and nut trees in Prague. At harvest time the fruit is free for all to pick. Perhaps your studies and hunger :) will lead you to Prague at harvest time?

Here is a link to the association, na-ovoce.cz with an interactive map:

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
Ps if you zoom in a bit on the map and head south, you will see that there are also wild fruit and nut trees in České Budějovice too.

Happy eating!
