Hi everybody,
With so many new English speaking people who are doing the Camino as a result of 'the way' and who do not know Spanish I thought it might be a good idea to translate the words of the pilgrim blessing that they will receive at Roncesvalles and elsewhere.

PILGRIM BLESSING AND PRAYER.

Lord God, you who called your servant Abraham
out of the town of Ur in Chaldea, and who watched
over him during all his wanderings; you who guided
the Jewish people through the desert, we ask you
to watch over - these your servants - who for
love of your name make this pilgrimage to Compostela.

Be for us a companion on our journey
our guide at the crossroads
our strength during fatigue
our defence in danger
our resting place on the road
our shade in the heat
our light in the darkness
our consolation during dejection
our solidarity in our decision,
so that under your guidance we may arrive
safely at the end of our journey,
and enriched with grace and virtues
we may return to our homes filled with
health and longlasting happiness.

Saint James, pray for us.

Hi Lydia!

When I was in Los Arcos last April pilgrims were all given a prayer card after the service with the Pilgrims' Prayer on one side and an image of St James on the other. The priest called us all up to the altar and gave out a card in one of several languages. It was a really nice thing to keep for the rest of the Camino and beyond.

Buen Camino!

Keith

Lydia,
Thank you for sharing this.
I am afraid the Camino is loosing its origin and purpose.
This helps bring us back to the roots of pilgrimage.

Hello Lydia,

ThanXs very much for the Pilgrims' Prayer' - i will certainly make a copy.

With best regards to you
Charlie

Lydia, bless you.

I carry a hand written book of morning and evening prayer, Bible readings and rosary prayers with me on my Camino.

I have just written this prayer into that book.

Norman and I start from Burgos, maybe this Friday, certainly on Saturday. I will lead us in the prayer so we may start the journey properly blessed.

How nice of you to publish this on our site, where many will take comfort of the message.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
And on the Credencial issued by the Cathedral of Santiago there is also a blessing and pilgrims' prayer:

Pilgrim Blessing - printed on the back of the Credencial there is a Pilgrim Blessing:

In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, receive this rucksack, the habit of your pilgrimage, so that, having atoned,
you hasten to prostrate yourself at Saint James' feet, where you yearn to arrive and, after having completed your journey, you come to us joyful with the help of God, who rules over the world without end. Amen.
Receive this staff as support for the journey and your efforts during your pilgrimage so that you are able to overcome the hoards of enemies and thus arrive safely at Saint James' feet and, after having completed your journey, you come to us joyful with the assent of the same God, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.
(Codex Calixtinus Sermón “Veneranda dies” Li, 17 Century)

Pilgrim Prayer - printed on the map in the Credencial there is also a Pilgrim’s Prayer:

St James, Apostle, chosen among the first,
you were the first to drink the Cup of the Master
and you are the great protector of pilgrims.
Make us strong in faith and happy in hope on our pilgrim journey,
following the path of Christian life,
and sustain us so that we may finally reach the glory of God the Father. Amen.

And more pilgrim blessings - including one you can use before you leave - here:
