Hi - I read we should bring a pillow case. Would it be to make our own pillow or put over the one's supplied? Do the albergue's supply pillows?

Thanks

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Albergues do generally supply pillows.
However there is no standard size or shape pillow used on the camino. Hence many pilgrims carry a lightweight scarf which can easily be used to cover whatever is provided.
A large piece of lightweight fabric which you can wrap over the pillow makes a fine substitute pillowcase.

Good luck, sweet dreams and Buen camino!

I like high pillows. The ones supplied I found to low but they were long. I folded my pillow in two and shoved it into a sweat shirt. I mention this so you see why @mspath wrote that a sheet of fabric may be better than a case.

I took a standard cotton pillowcase that I'd sprayed with Permethrin - not very eco, but covered the sometimes grubby albergue pillows and kept the BB at bay! In Galicia, and sometimes elsewhere, the albergues provided a disposable fitted sheet and pillowcase.

An old camping trick, is to use a bag with some clothing in stead of a pillow. That way you can adjust the pillow to fit your sleeping style - some of the supplied pillows are way thicker than I'm used to. With a bit of practice, you can even use a closed dry bag for that purpose (keeps bugs out of your clothing).

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I liked having my own pillowcase. Many of the pillows are long though, so it didn't fit that well but it was still nice having it.

I used my sleeping bag. You can stuff the pillow under the flap of the bag and not worry about a pillow case.

I brought a permethrin treated pillowcase and never used it. I eventually ditched it as dead weight.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
I usually bring a pillowcase open at both ends and longer than usual to fit the size differences. My wife just put it together simply from lightweight silk type material. Usually treat it along with silk sleep sac.

I bring a very light silk king size pillowcase with a zipper. You just never know when the pillowcases were washed or what sick pilgrim slept on them. I was very happy to have mine.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

On my previous Caminos, i’ve brought my double silk liner ((I’m a starfish sleeper; a single makes me feel like a mummy) and a silk pillowcase. This time, I’m going to trim my double liner by about 50cm down its length and make a long pillowcase out of the offcut. Less weight, but I think more comfortable. (Like others, I double the Albergue pillow to make it thicker).)

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.
