Hello from Gothenburg.

I´m planing to walk from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela from the 19/5-20/6. Unfortunately my friend has had some heart problem so I have to walk by my self. Does anyone know if this is OK for a lady soon 60 to walk alone? I also wonder how to get to get to St Jean Pied de Port from Pamplona?

Hello Karin

I´m 62, also walking alone May/June. From everything I´ve heard and read it is safe to walk alone provided you take sensible precautions. I believe there are many women around our ages who walk alone.

Hi Karin,
Sorry I can't help you with the Pamplona question, but I walked alone from Le Puy to Santiago and loved it. I met many wonderful people along the way. Especially in Spain, you don't generally have to wait long and another pilgrim will be coming along. There were quite a few women walking 'alone', but you will probably find you can team up with others for longer or shorter times, if that is what you find you want to do.
I met a couple from Quebec just after Cahors in France, and we walked at about the same pace, so over the weeks we quite often saw each other, even if it was just in the albergues at night sometimes. We 'lost' each other for a few days in the O'Cebreiro region, but at Sarria we met up again, and decided to stick together for the last 100km. Somehow it seemed very 'right' at that stage that we should walk into Santiago together. So you might start 'alone' but who knows if you will finish like that!

You can get the 6pm bus to Roncesvalles and then get a taxi to St Jean - they wait at the bus stop in Roncesvalles.
Or, you can email Caroline Aphessetche at apcaroline@hotmail.com to aqrrange a lift from Pamplona to St Jean. She runs her the Express Burricot (little donkey) taxis to take peregrinos over the mountain every day at about 11am and then 4pm with pilgrims sharing the taxi cost. It could be as low as 9 euro if there are enough of you - or 30 euro if only one or two.

You should be fine. I met people in well into their 70s on my Camino. Buen Camino!

Absolutely safe, even safer than other places. Don't worry about. And your age is perfect to walk and enjoy the Camino and the nature.

Buen Camino,
