2014 - stages 1-9 camino de frances
We are walking from Leon to Santiago from 16 April and trying to decide on what rainwear to take. Any advice?

There are two options here, a lot of people favour the poncho while other the rain jacket and rain pants.
I think its up to the individual but I would say take something to keep the wet out. Hopefully you'll have a rain free camino, but it's unlikely.

I can only speak about my walk in April I was in Leon almost the same day you are starting, By that date in 2014 it would rain primarily at night & it was staring to be 25c during the day & it warmed up every day after. Some mornings would bring ice early morning but it would be gone within an hour. I did not need my rain pants from that date on. However I do recommend a fleece & rain coat for that time period. As I would get very cold at the end of my day until I found a meal.
Buen Camino

I walked in October. Colder mornings and evenings. And most likely rain in Galicia. In unpredictable weather conditions such as this what works best is efficient layering....

- merino or synthetic tshirt/sox, feels warm even when wet
- poncho (ideally sleeveless) covers your pack and most of your upper body from rain.
- A windbreaker or breathable shell (hydrophobic) for higher elevations, cooler mornings and towns
- thin insulating layer (merino wool sweater or fleece) for extra warmth.
- breathable rain pants for torrential rain.

During colder rainy days, i usually wear my shell under the poncho so that condensation from the poncho does not reach my body.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Here's my experience. Rain plus wind equals wet. So, I make my plans on Rain plus Wind. In the rain I experienced on the CDS had I relied on a poncho or an umbrella....I would have been wet. Wet equals sucky times. Wet paints, wet underwear, wet socks, wet feet, wet blisters... Picture yourself 5 miles from shelter, it's pouring down rain and it's coming at you sideways because it's also very windy. Lite weight rain jacket/pants IMO.

We are walking now and are presently in Porto Marin. I have a regular poncho and a rain jacket for wearing on windy days. I think before we leave I am going one of the Spanish rain jacket/pack cover they give more protection to the pack and body than anything I have seen. If I were doing it again I would wait till.I got here.

Absolutely the is water every wear. When we started out this morning from Porta Marina another storm was happening. We walked in rain, sleet and eventually snow to Palas de Rei with heavy winds. Long day.

Wow. Stay warm and dry. Also please ask the weather to be sunny in two weeks.

Seems like its going to be raining the whole of April from Leon all the way to Santiago...I am starting off on the 17th/18th from Leon - got myself a poncho, a heavy duty rain jacket/pants...still I don't think its going to help much.... :(
Kinda worried off the raining and the cold :( , coming from a warm country

No one can know absolutely what a person will encounter with the weather, we can only study historical data & decide for ourselves when we should start. In any case we learn just how adaptable the human body & spirit can be.
