Time of past OR future Camino
July (2018)
Hi everyone, My husband and I are planning to start our camino from SJPP on 11 July. We already booked Orrison that night. We recently realized the San Fermin festival is happening and are planning to find transport from Roncenvalles to Panplona on 12 July after walking from Orrison to Roncenvalles. The bus only leaves in the morning. Does anyone have suggestions of how to get from Roncenvalles to Pamplona after a day of walking on 12 July?

You might call a taxi or even hitch to go from Roncesvalles to Pamplona. Of course if you do that you will miss the traditional special evening mass and pilgrim blessing offered within Roncesvalles monastery.

Roncesvalles monastery itself has been welcoming pilgrims since the eleventh century. Do plan to attend the evening mass in the ancient Romanesque church and the traditional pilgrimage blessing; this is a most meaningful and poignant way to begin your camino journey.

Buen Camino!

The San Fermin 'festival' will be until July 14th this year, so if you stay at Roncesvalles albergue the night of 12 July and take the bus at 9.20 AM the following morning you still can join the 'party' on July 14th. Be aware that most of the albergues in Pamplona are closed during San Fermin, hotels are full booked and the prices of a room can go up to € 500,-- per night.
But why would one like to attend this festival? The running of the bulls takes only 10 minutes at 8 AM, and the rest of the day/night the streets are overcrowded with drunk people, eating lots of bullmeat ..... not my cup of tea .....

Being a hospitalera at Roncesvalles I fully agree with MsPatch; this place is so very special, sleeping in a comfortable bed in this beautiful renovated Monastry dating from the 12th Century and of course attending the pilgrims Mass at 8 PM is very special, when you get your blessing on your way to Santiago de Compostela!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
We were in Pamplona a few days before the running of the bulls. It was a zoo! Pamplona is, IMO, normally a party town, with folks on the street sometimes even at 4 am! City has some nice restaurants. However, at that time of year, we got out of town pronto....the noise, crowds, and unique smells, that come with too much drinking permeated the ground and air in the morning! Hey, but everyone has there preferences.Buen Camino!
