Spiritual Accompaniments

Hi all

I'm due to leave for my first Camino four weeks from today and I'm incredibly excited! I have most of my equipment and I've been following various threads on this forum! I had a question about spiritual reading though. Could people suggest some good spiritual accompaniments for the journey? I like people like Henri Nouwen or Jean Vanier etc. - could anyone suggest some 'pilgrimage style' reading for the journey?

Thanks so much,

Chris

I can recommend you Anselm Grün.

Hi Chris, welcome to the Forum!

I've read these OR heard they were good. You can see if any of them interest you:

"The Art of Pilgrimage" by Phil Cousineau

"The Divine Hours" by Phyllis Tickle

"Reaching Out" by Henri Nouwen (anything by Nouwen, really!)

"Pocket Prayers for Pilgrims" by John Pritchard (really nice and small book with poetry and prayers for different stages of pilgrimage. I'd highly recommend this one.)

Enjoy all the planning and Buen Camino!

Thank you all so much for your replies - those are really helpful suggestions indeed and I'll investigate them! Faith, I love the sound of the 'Pocket Prayers for Pilgrims'! I've read some of John Pritchard before and I really like his stuff! I'll take a look at all these suggestions!

Stop in at the university outside Pamplona. They have a special sello and, if memory serves, you can get a small book by/about Josemaría Escrivá which is (was for me) very fortifying.

Buen camino.

@Chris Hassell There is a book you might enjoy, looking at others in your list, Walking on the Pastures of Wonder by John O'Donohue edited by John Quinn. It is unfortunately not available on Kindle, and is a (small) hardback. And theoretically it is only available in Ireland, although I think Bookdepository (illicitly?) will deliver to UK. He is very good on walking and meditation and landscape and beauty. I find it much easier than much of his other more well known stuff.
He sadly died a few years ago but this book came out last year - it is transcripts of radio interviews/conversations.
Another Irish book is Going up the Holy Mountain by Gary Hastings. About pilgrim-walking on Croagh Patrick, a holy mountain in the west of Ireland.
Both Gary and John are/were priests.
A large part of the John O'Donohue book is available as free podcasts of the original radio broadcasts. PM if you want further details.
