Starting and ending in Santiago - late September 2015

There's so much helpful information here for a first time pilgrim, and for that I'm very grateful.

I plan to start my 12-14 day walk in mid-September from Astorga. I'll be coming from Rome and returning to Seattle (home) on September 30. It's likely that I'll have more luggage with me than I plan to take on the camino, so my thought is to fly to Santiago from Rome (which seems to be significantly cheaper than flying to Madrid) and staying in a hotel the first night in Santiago before taking a bus to Astorga.

I'd like to find a hotel where I'll be able to store excess luggage for the 2 weeks I'm walking, then stay there again when I'm finished before flying home.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a hotel (or any type of accommodation) in Santiago that offers luggage storage?

Get a small daypack to carry water, food, and extra clothing, don't bother to buy an expensive backpack, use a baggage transfer service to have your luggage transported each day. It's usually €5-6 per day and then it drops down to €3 when you get to Sarria onward.

Since I'll be traveling for several weeks prior to this and will have more with me than I'll need on the Camino, I'd like to find a place to leave a bag in Santiago and was hoping to find a hotel to stay on both ends of my trip that would store the bag.

Almost every hotel will do this, so find one that fits your budget (booking.com is a good source), and contact them to verify they will hold your suitcase. Even http://www.hsanmartinpinario.com/ probably will store your suitcase for a couple of weeks.

Indeed. SanMartin Pinario will storage luggage for you whether you stay in a regular tourist accomodation or in a simpler and cheaper pilgrim room.

Hi there, I walked the Camino 25 years ago, and this May will be starting my mother off on the Camino as she celebrates her 70th birthday While I'll be carrying my rucksack, I don't think my mother is quite up to it. I'd prefer to arrange a luggage transfer for her each day, so that all she has to carry is a day rucksack. Could you tell me more about this luggage transport you mention? Do I need to email someone beforehand about it, or just arrange it on a day to day basis in each place we stay? We'll be starting from StJPdP on 24 May.... You also mention a cost - is that recent, i.e. last year, and does it refer to one item of luggage of a particular size?

The albergues have envelopes you attach to the luggage you want transported, fill out your info and where you want it transported to, place the € inside the envelope, and call them the night before and let them know what town you want your bag transported to. You're not obligated to stay at the place your bag gets transported to.
