Starting my Camino on Sep 30th - anyone else? any tips?

God bless you all!!! I will start my first Camino, after years saying to myself I should do it. I am planning to be in Madrid on Sep 29th in the morning, get a rented car from Barajas to Pamplona, then the ALSA bus from there to SJPdP. Getting my credentials, sleeping in a little hotel, just to be easier to rearrange my gear and, in the company of my beloved son Lucas, start walking in Sep 30th.

I have just confirmed that my brother, who I haven't seen for years, is going to join me in Leon, which is by itself a blessing.

Is there anybody else walking in October? Any tips? I don't expect the weather to be too cold, but as I have read in another thread, I will keep my eyes, heart and soul open for all the wonderful experience that I am expecting to live.

Buen camino! The rental car may be more of a burden than a benefit; I just did a week of driving in Spain, and there is no parking in the cities! Trains and buses from Madrid to Pamplona are very convenient. Regardless, have a great walk.

Thanks Falcon269 - actually, it might be ok for me because I am not planning to stop anywhere between Madrid and Pamplona - actually, the office of the rental card company is located 2 blocks away of the Bus Station in Pamplona ... Thanks!!!!!!!!

Fred, we will start walking on the 30th from SJPdP, few days later, but it would be a pleasure to meet you guys somewhere along the way ... Have a Buen Camino!!! Thanks for the suggestion, I will check it.

We hiked the Camino the same time last year, blogged at tploomis.wordpress.com. There were several mornings that started off below freezing and a few days that never got much above that. I don't know if you consider that cold. I classify it as nippy! It was pleasant, though, with a layered t-shirt, a polar fleece equivalent (I'm a strong proponent of the Patagonia nanopuff jacket or similar as an alternative to polar fleece), and a lightweight hardshell outer jacket (also doing double duty as a raincoat). A knit cap topped it off.

Tks ... I imagine that those few days were the first ones crossing the Pyrenees right? I do prefer cold rather than hot weather - I will be prepared for that. Thanks!!!!!!

Actually the Pyrenees up to several days past Pamplona (end of September) were exceptionally hot -- sweating in the sun hot. It got coldest going over the two mountain ranges closer to Santiago in late October/early November. Of course that was last year and this year could be very different.

"Very different" indeed is possible.

After a chilly crossing of the Pyrenees, everyday warm weather ended suddenly at Belorado for me in early October of 2012.

I had a few days thereafter which could be described as warm but for the most part it was either: frost in the morning with cool and clear days (loved those) OR incessant wind and rain. The latter surprised me on the Meseta.

I had bought sunglasses just for those high plains. Never used them. But I still loved the Meseta.

You will have a great time no matter what, though.
