Starting Primitivo on the coast? Walking till late?

Hola, peregrinos,

as I've mentioned elsewhere, I will be walking the Camino Primitivo with my son in late Sept/early Oct. We are both keen walkers, used to 30+km days even in hilly terrain. My quest for direct flight (with only a train connection to get us back home) I have gained a day and a half compared to our original plan and the idea occurred to me, to add some distance before the start of the Camino itself in Oviedo. Are there any worthwhile options? I have been thinking about either starting walking directly from the airport itself (but have not checked yet albergue options in that area - on the Norte presumably) - but I was worried there might be too much road walking. Another idea was to take a bus to Gijón a start from there on the GR 100 to Oviedo. Has anyone done something similar? Any other nice options?

Another question: when we hiked the C.Francés back in the day with my (now) wife, we followed the pattern of reaching the end of the day-etappe around mid-day or early afternoon. This time I would like to walk for a longer time (and include some breaks during the day) and reach the overinight albergue later in the afternoon/early evening. Will I run the risk of finding the place full - or would it be "safe" to do it this way in early October?

Thank you!

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

The airport is to the North-West of Oviedo, close to Aviles on the Norte. There is a link to Oviedo used by those who have dropped down from the Norte at Villaviciosa to visit the Camara Santa.

You can find some details in the Cicerone guide to the Northern Caminos. 29km via Nubledo and Posada de Lanera. The only obvious accommodation is Pension la Estacion at Nubledo. A decent mapping app should help you find a route. Direct from the airport? I wouldn't try it. Otherwise bus to Villaviciosa and follow the Norte to the split at Casquita. Someone else here may have some advise on that route.

Me, if I had a spare day, I would spend it in Oviedo. wonderful city with much to see.

I'm starting the Primitivo in Villaviciosa in early September with my Dad and we are planning two walking days to get to Oviedo. Nice short days to start out slow and ease into a routine. We are taking the train to Oviedo then cabbing it probably to Villaviciosa. Not much in terms of accommodations but municipals on our legs/stops but we plan to stay with the Carmelite nuns at the monastery which will also enhance our pilgrimage. Then we will wing it for the other municipal since they don't take reservations, the worst that can happen is we cab it to another place or keep walking and we both are fine with that. Good luck and Buen Camino!

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Check on Gronze or with the Wise Pilgrim or Buen Camino apps to make sure that the albergues you have in mind are * open*. While there will be fewer travelers, there's also fewer choices at some points. And watch your daylight...

I second Tincatinker's suggestion. Oviedo is a fantastic city to visit and you'd be doing yourself a disservice to miss it!

My wife and I are considering something similar next Spring, beginning at the coast. At first we considered Gijon, but a few people recommended Aviles, instead. We are looking to spend the afternoon checking out the city, picking up a few items for the journey, staying at an AirBnB within sight of the beach, then heading the next day on a SSE route to Oviedo.

Whatever you decide, Buen Camino!

After walking the Camino del Salvador to Oviedo I walked to Avilés. It was a pretty easy walk.

Which monastery is that? I would be happy to stay in any monastic establishment, if possible. :)

Concerning walking the Primitive in late Sept/early Oct. I'm leaving Oviedo, also with my son, around the same time and I'm unconcerned about whether or not it's safe. It will be!! Perhaps we will meet along the way.

I have been trying to find a way to avoid the circus during the last stages of Frances. In two hours you can take the Lugo - Ourense train and walk the last stages on the Plata. Is it a good idea...
https://www.alojamientoloshospitales.com/albergue I found a link to this place in an old thread, but can't find it on WisePilgrim, the Gronze map or if I search by address. Can someone tell me...
Hi all Heading out for a meal tonight and Pilgrim mass before starting the Primitivo tomorrow. Any recommendations on where to get a great meal in Oviedo?
