Stop in Pamplona

Hey all!

I will be starting my camino in SJPP. In Pamplona I have a friend living whom I'd like to visit very much, so I am thinking about having this city as an endstation at one of my days. Would this make sense, and does anybody have any ideas about how much to walk/where to stop in the days before.

Hi Ingevr. Pamplona is a popular staging point in most of the guides to the Camino Frances (except Brierley). You might find this website http://www.gronze.com/camino-frances useful in planning your stages of the Camino particularly given your plans to film and interview along the way. Gronze provides information on the route(s), elevations, accommodation and refreshment opportunities.

My stages were:
St Jean to Roncavelles - 29k
Roncevalles - Zubiri 21k
Zubiri - Pamplona 22k
If you want to break up day one then stop in either Orisson or Valcarlos and you will be in Pamplona in four days, a beautiful city well worth exploring.

I would go as far as to plan to stop at Trinidad and spend the whole of the next day enjoying Pamplona ......You just can't go wrong with Pamplona .....unless you get caught up in san Fermin.

Download google translate on your phone.you'll have the option to use the camera to scan the Spanish and see it in English.Hope that helps.

Google Chrome will provide an automatic translation. Brierley's guide is readily available via Ivar, Amazon & other retail outlets (other guides are available). I suspect that there is a shop in St Jean selling english language guidebooks though I have no personal experience of shopping in St Jean.

Hey all!

I will be starting my camino in SJPP. In Pamplona ....so I am thinking about having this city as an endstation at one of my days...

There are a couple ways to approach this and it has to do with your overall schedule for your Camino. Do you have a flight out or transportation reservations leaving Santiago on a certain day? How much flex time have you built into your Camino? Do you need to inform your friend in advance of when you will arrive or can you let them know the general time frame you will be there?

My suggestion, since it is so close to your SJPP starting point and it may take you a while to get into your hiking grove, that you not pin yourself down to specific places to stop. Walk until you get tired, but not overly tired, depending on weather conditions see how far is comfortable for you. When you get to Pamplona, stop and see your friend even if it is early in the day. You can make up time later by taking a bus if need be or cutting a rest day.

An unusual view of the Plaza del Castillo - when standing in the square it looks to be perfectly straight but many little faults can be seen from a birds eye view .
This postcard view is pre 1998 , before all the underground parking and clever waste disposal chutes were added. During this time the historic Bandstand was propped up and archaeology preserved. Wherever there is development in the 'Old Town' , remains and archaeology are usualy unearthed -

http://www.urcamino.com/ is a great website that can help you stage yourself...it asks some basic information about your trip, then gives you the places that best match your walking plans. Just click on the Planner link. Also, if there is someplace specific that you want to stop, but it isn't on your original itinerary, you can check and uncheck the places you want to stay. It has to be one of my absolute favorite tools to play around with.
