I am looking for a 5/6 day walk from Lisbon (or possibly Porto) in September. Ideally with good transport links for return to starting point.
We did the Fisherman’s Trail last year - too hot and sandy.
Either coastal or inland with good accommodation.
Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks

Anecdotally, I’ve heard repeatedly that the walk from Lisbon isn’t great: long stretches between places to stop and a fair bit of beside the road walking. Contrast that with Porto: start in Matosinhos and Day 1 is oceanside on mostly boardwalks. At Vila do Conde, opt for the route toward Barcelos, Ponte and Valença and you get three lovely days of Portuguese countryside. I’ve walked that several times and would again in a heartbeat. I’ve also walked oceanside from do Conde to A Guarda. Didn’t like it as much…but that’s a preference thing.

Hello, I have done porto to Santiago in September and found the weather to be very nice for walking. If you like the ocean scenery I recommend doing porto to Vigo. Doable in 7 days with excellent transportation at both places.
I have also done lisbon to Santiago, later in the year and hit a lot of rain and although some interesting places, really liked santarem and tomar. I found the first 4 days very boring, lots of traffic initially then farming and flat.
If you don't think you could make Vigo in the time-frame, you can stay in portugal and walk to Valenca or Tui.
Enjoy 😉

Coimbra to Porto? Manageable distances, good support.

Unfortunately, there aren't many great walks leading out of Lisbon.

One option could be the Caminho do Mar as far as Óbidos, either starting in Lisbon or taking the train to Cascais and starting there. The main highlights are: the ocean scenery after Cascais; Sintra with its palaces and castle; and the walled medieval town of Óbidos. The cons are that the signage is a bit neglected and there's a lot of road walking, but at least it's not sand ;)

Here are our stages and accommodation (for two):

1. Lisbon - Cascais (26km) - Wine Inn €61
2. Cascais - Sintra (28km) - Vale do Sol €54
3. Sintra - Mafra (24km) - Mafra Hotel €87
4. Mafra - Torres Vedras (30km) - Quebra Costas €49
5. Torres Vedras - Granja MG (23km-ish) €55
6. Granja MG - Óbidos (20km-ish) - Senhor da Pedra €48

This site details a number of options which you can mix and match. For example Porto - Braga - Ponte de Lima - Valenca - Porto (by train). There are endless possibilities depending on whether you like coast or countryside or history or whatever.
