The "memorandum"

The latest version of Raimund Joos's guides mention a "document closer to the original spirit of the Compostela" being issued by "the Franciscans" in Santiago, and mentions the name "Memorandum" for it.

I have found absolutely nothing on this either on this forum or, really, on the web, so now my curiosity is piqued. Can anyone clarify?

It seems to be quite a mysterious document. I had a look into his guidebook on Amazon.

In English, he writes: In the Franciscan Monastery (point 11 on the city map page 257) the visitor certificate Memorandum will be issued furthermore. The acquisition is purposely not based on any conditions.

In German*), he writes [my translation]: By the way, the visitor's certificate Memorandum is said to be still available in the Franciscan Monastery (see number 9 on the city map on p. 247). The document is designed to be granted without any conditions associated with it.

In other words, any visitor can get it.

When you refer to the original spirit of the Compostela, I suppose you refer to the Compostelas of a few decades ago and not to the century old Compostelas? Because those Compostelas were definitely based on a number of conditions that the pilgrim had to fulfil, although none of them involved the obligation to walk a certain number of kilometers or miles.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Yes, I mean the one from a few decades ago. The original ones certainly had very specific conditions attached.

I've written to the author and he has confirmed it is available at the monastery - the German text seems to have changed a little in the latest edition (which came out last week), and states clearly that the Memorandum is available; that you get it at the monastery is (to me) more implied than explicit.

On the 800th anniversary of St Francis' walk ro Santiago a certificate was available at the church in Santiago. Perhaps they are still giving them to pilgrims.

If "minoram" is Latin for memorandum then yes, you can get one every 100 years at the monastery. I feel very lucky and honoured to have mine 😁

Here's a copy of the certificate that pilgrims could obtain in 2014/2015 at the church San Francisco. The certificate was given the name Cotolaya, named after a person who was involved or said to have been involved in founding the church. The phrase Fratrum Minorum that appears in the text is the Latin name for the Franciscan Friars.

The "Memorandum" appears to still be a mystery.
