I plan on catching a train early morning from Bayonne to sjpdp. Do I have to book or can I just turn up to the station and grab a ticket there? I looked online and it appears there's a train around 7am ish

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
If you are antsy and have spare time in Bayonne, just walk past the station and buy a ticket for the next morning. In Bayonne the Cathedral and the Basque Museum are well worth a visit. Fete de Jambon is on this Easter weekend.

According to the regional SNCF website, the Bayonne-SJPP line is closed until further notice due to subsidence on the line. There is a replacement bus service in operation, timetable here.

PS- Does anyone know if this might be affected by the strike?

When you get to SJPdP chill! Do not rush out of town onto the Camino. There is much to see and do in SJPdP. Get a good night's sleep and start out after a hearty breakfast the next morning.

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
Re: the abrupt closing of the #62 line due to subsidence, the SNCF folks will arrange for buses to run the largely parallel road route. Just be at the station.

As regards the effect of strikes...who can say? Vive la France! Just remain flexible.

Or, you could share a ride with others in the same situation. Try Express Bourricot: https://www.expressbourricot.com/

They may already have a run scheduled for someone else who booked ahead. Perhaps you can try to share the ride.

Hope this helps.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
For those substitute buses you need a ticket which you can purchase in the rr station. If you have a prepurchased valid TER line 62 train ticket it should be accepted for the bus. Ask at the train station.

You just buy a ticket in the machine at the station. No need to book ahead. Not sure you even can. And that early train ride through the river valley to Saint Jean is beautiful. Not to be missed!!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Keep in mind that many of the ticket Kiosks at the stations will not accept U.S. credit cards. You may have to go to the ticket window or use cash.

The closing of the #62 line to SJPP has been very common over the years. I can recall years when the train was down for most of the year and the bus was used on a regular basis. The bus arrives at the train station in St. Jean.

They seem to have the most difficult time with that particular train line....

The #62 is really more like a streetcar or metro train that follows the highway and even crosses it at several it at several places. It is not a highly developed track system and seems to be shut down very easily.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

It is too close the the River Nive and the spring run off from the mountains is a big problem. It would take a ton of money to bolster the retaining wall along the river. It suffers from the same issues that closed the train route to Somport/Canfranc. Sadly due to aged and crumbling bridges on the route, the day will come when the only transport is going to be by bus.
