We are starting the Senda Litoral from Porto on the 15th May bound for SDC. On completion we have to return to Lisbon and would appreciate advice as to latest rail and or bus ways to Lisbon.

Back in 2013 I bused from Santiago to Porto (over-nighted 2 nights) and then took a train to Lisboa.. Sorry no idea of what it cost. Cheers

Book a ticket on the bus from SDC - www.alsa.es Or, you can also use gain, but I don’t think it’s as a direct connection.

Unless you are enamored of bus travel, as some on the forum are, be warned that it is a long and boring ride, IMO. With a long (about 45 inutes?) stop at a non-descript roadside rest area. At least that’s how it was. I would go to great lengths to avoid repeating that trip, but I do understand that the train requires a transfer in Vigo. And remember the time change — Portugal is an hour behind Spain, so time of departure to time of arrival doesn’t give you the full travel time.

You have bought your plane ticket already, I guess.
the airports of Santiago, Vigo, Porto, Madrid avoid long travel or hassle.

redexpressos has one direct bus leaving Santiago at 12:00 and arriving Lisbon 20:30h (50€, 9h30 travel). If you get in at Vigo it is still 8h to Lisbon (34€).

One of the best connections to Lisbon I see in the combination of the 4 hours bus transfer SDC to Porto and additional 3 hours in another bus oder train to Lisbon. At least I can bear 4h pressed in a "can", but 6 or 9h would be a challenge.

To spend less money more changes seem to help. SdC - Vigo is 6,70€ (every hour), train Vigo - Porto ~15€ (bus ??), while SDC - Porto with ALSA/redeexpressos is ~30€. The (often direct) bus from Porto to Lisbon had been 19€. As busses from Valenca are about the same cost (22€) and more frequent, going from Vigo to Tuy by ATSA and walking over to Valenca is better for the price, but time consuming.
Vigo (bus station) - Porto has up to 3 buses per day @17€. You arrive at Campo 24 Agosto where the bus to Fatima/Lisbon is leaving.

Be warned! Vigo is a bit complicated if you need to change. The train station is on the water front, while the bus station is somethere up on the hills. To my experience ATSA does not stop at the bus station. Porto

Good question... I begin on June 3 on the same route. This thread will be helpful, but please let me know what you decide to do. I have found a few possibilities but am a bit lost as to which is the best choice.

I live in Portugal and have tried various options. I am over 65years old so like everyone else get half price on the train. The cheapest and most comfortable for an older person is bus from Santiago to Braga. An hours layover so time for lunch, then then the high speed train to Lisbon.

As I will be 74 this year, thank you Hughb. I have looked at the bus timetable as well as the Alfa Pendular high speed rail timetables and this will certainly how my wife and I will now get to Lisbon.
We completed the French Camino some years ago and resulted in a partial knee replacement. This time we will be taking it easy.

Thanks for this thread. I am quite seriously looking to do Lisbon to Santiago (probably coastal route to keep temp down) when I finish the Camino Frances in a few days, but wasn’t sure how best to get to Lisbon.

The answers are perfect!
