which route to take across the france/spain border?

hey there
am currently drifting round the sth of france & wondering about the different crossing points into spain. had thought to start at st jean pied de port, but have been looking at the route from arles, which crosses round somport...opinions? tips? words of wisdom & experience??

If you prefer a more solitary hike, take the Somport Pass into Aragon and hike to Puente La Reina from there. Hundreds of pilgrims start in St Jean every day and accommodation can be scarce on the Spanish side, especially if there are fiestas in the area!
