Hi
My name is Phil and am about to undertake the VDLP, starting in Seville on March 7th. My travel schedule is very open ended as I want to take a lot of time out to enjoy my potential experiences. During my time on the VDLP and potential other caminos (Frances, North, etc) I will be seeking opportunities to do some voluntary work (looking for bed and board only in return) to help me budget my limited funds. If you know of anything that can help me or if you are in a position to help, please contact me and i will definitely reply.
Many Thanks
Phil Austin

What about WWOOFing? Willing Workers on Organic Farms? The deal is free accommodation and food for 4-5 hours (or less) work helping out each day. And you learn Organic farming too. They are usually communal run (shared meals, good camaraderie etc). I did this for over 6 months in both Spain and Portugal a few years back. It was amazing! I'm thinking of doing a bit this summer after my Camino. Don't know if there is any en-route though, and some WWOOFing places might want you to commit for a week or two to make it worthwhile to them. Some people stay years!

see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WWOOF

WWOOF Espana http://ruralvolunteers.org/WHOSTS/

Note you may have to join WWOOF to access contact lists. Let me know if you want more details.

Bye the way, the first time I heard of the Camino de Santiago was while Woofing in Galicia

Hi Phil,
You might find something along the way, but just be aware that loads of folk ask about volunteering in the albergues, and the hospitaleros usually have to say no, either because beds are limited, or because one needs to have done the official hospitalero training course. Of course it might be different on the VDLP, or in private albergues, so just keep that 'open ended' attitude, and who knows what doors might open for you? ;)

thanks for all the replies, folks. it looks like there is a potential for something after i finish my walk(s). it will be in spain and will give me the chance to still be 'me'. So, 'YAY'!!!
Thanks again.

@flosstin Hi Phil! Wow, you're off on your trip very soon. Re your request for info on any volunteer opportunities during your trek, a great place to check up projects that offer bed, board and meals in exchange for your help and expertise is: http://www.workaway.info/. Once on the website, click on the relevant country (i.e. Spain) then browse through tons of projects currently needing volunteers. Hope this helps, cheers. Buen Camino!! :)

A couple are restoring an abbey making it into an albergue and looking for volunteers to help - on Facebook go to The Abbey. I am sure they would be very happy with any help.

The Abbey of Ilarratz and Eskirotz is situated on The Way close to the city of Pamplona in Northern Spain.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.
