Hello,
I am looking for any thoughts regarding hiking just a portion of the camino. Having thought about the walk for some time, but not having the ability to plan an extended trip, we are thinking to walk for 8-10 days. We enjoy history, nature, people and new experiences. one of the we is a 10 year old with lots of hiking/backpacking/backcountry camping experience. To us spending our vacation time walking between towns in a foreign country sounds awesome. Any thoughts on the best area/camino for a kiddo to have the best experience? Should we start at the beginning or start where we would end up in Santiago? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi and welcome.
Alot of questions so take your time to browse through this wonderful informative forum.

First of all imho a hike is different than a pilgrimage/ walk on a Camino path. Do not expect wilderness or backcountry. Especially on the Camino Frances you will be walking sometimes through semi industrial estates and more populated areas.

Is reaching Santiago a must for you?
Do you think that in the future you will have the possibility to travel again to Spain to repeat your experience?

There are also lots of threads here of walking a Camino with a child. I personally think that at 10 years of age your child will have a lovely time.

Lots of people recommend walking the Camino Frances as a first time Camino because of the choices of albergues and hostales and the fact that is the best known Camino. I think your child would enjoy this the most because in terms of " entertainment " there is more to see than on the lesser known Caminos.

So enjoy the preparations.

Ponferrada to Santiago has minimal industrial walking and great scenery. It takes nine to ten days. I suggest you look at it.

I would love to think that we would get back to Spain, but it is hard to say... With that in mind, it may be fun to end up in Santiago- hiking the last 100km there. Thank you for provoking some thoughts and ideas.

Although the 100km between Sarria and Santiago can be awfully crowded many suggest this section for walking with children because there are more children to be found on this section for your child to interact with. I suppose also it is because shorter daily walks can be taken because there are more accomodations.

Vaya con Dios. I too think Ponferrada to Santiago sounds nice. Or, Sarria to Santiago. Then maybe walk on to Fisterra.
I think a ten year old can receive the Compostela. That would be an added bonus. Remember, you must walk last 100kms of any route for it.

How about Burgos to Leon? Both very nice towns paced with history.
Then you will have the lovely meseta with small pittoreske villages on the route.
I flew in to Bilbao and took the bus to Burgos.
