Time of past OR future Camino
Too many and too often!
I just came across an article and video about a project to create a virtual walk-through model of Portomarin as it was before the building of the new dam in 1963 forced the relocation of the town higher up the hill. Some fascinating snippets of film and images of the original town which is now lost. Very different from the modern sanitised version many of us are now familiar with!

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
Thanks for this interesting dive in the past !
Who knows why this town is named Portomarin despite the fact it is not (no longer ?) a harbour and not at seaside ?

The original town of Portomarín was constructed and built next to a Roman bridge over the Minho River and first rebuilt in the Middle Ages. For more info check out this Wikipedia link and this in Galician Roots. The town name is said to derived from Pons Minea .

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Yes but it was not on the seaside, yet.
However, "marin" sounds like related to "mar", to the sea...

@Pafayac: Have a look here (point 55) or here. In short, the porto part does not refer to a port for ships or boats (remember Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port ;)) and the marín part refers to the name Marinus.

Apparently, the name of the location is first documented in 792 as Portumarini in a document written in Latin.

From this traditional village to the modern Portmarin its sad, makes the modern town seem soulless.
