I have only stayed in Belari, so I can’t help with personal recommendations, but Gronze has a listing that has ratings by pilgrims. The ones with the longest green bars are the ones that are most highly reviewed. I’m sure others will suggest specific places, but this is a start.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
So far as I'm aware there are only two "Albergues" in St Jean though it is a few years since I've been there. I find Gronze pretty reliable for Albergue / Refugio listings and it suggests:
Albergue de peregrinos de Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
Refuge Accueil Paroissial Kaserna

Other accommodations, excluding Belari, are:

Gîte d'étape Ultreia
Gîte Le Chemin vers l'Etoile
Gîte Izaxulo
Gîte Buen Camino
Gîte Compostelle

Which I suppose leaves the hanging question " Why not Belari?" Do tell... ;)

I am not a big fan of SJPdP, it is a bit too much day tripper for me. I stayed at Hotel Central once but every other time it has been straight up the hill Orisson.

A selection of Camino Jewellery
I have driven the Valcarlos route many times but admit I enjoy the company of Jean Jacques and his entourage to start my journey and I have met some very interesting people at Orisson who I still stay in touch with.

I too like Jean-Jacques and the others in Orisson. I’m always pleased to go back there 😎

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
I stayed last year in Azkorria and was happy with everything there. There was a very good breakfast in the morning.

There are new albergues
  • Gîte de la porte St Jacques 51 rue de la Citadelle
  • La Vita é bella place du trinquet
  • Bidean 11 rue d'Espagne
Go to the pilgrims office we have the list of all the albergues with the price we can give you all the advice you need

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Same, or similar, for me Don. Except I head for Valcarlos. I like to start that camino without a panting throng and with a second day that takes me well past Roncesvalles. I embrace misanthropy more as a hobby than a life-style but I do like a quiet life while my feet, legs, pack and I get reacquainted ;)
Hi I have a quick question about the first day. I have done the CF twice. I will be doing it again starting in late October. Is the hill up to Orisson steeper than the hill on the Valcarlos route or is it 6 of one half a dozen of the other. Even if the Napolean and Orisson are open then I may still opt to try the other way. Walk to Valcarlos and then to Espinal. I like to start my caminos now with shorter distances the first few days as my age gets longer, if you know what I mean. Haha.

When I walked (June 2018) Beilari was full. I booked a bed at Hostel Gite Zuharpeta. It was nice, & a continental breakfast was available.

Really looking forward to a day or two in SJPdP before heading into Spain. Yea, tons of tourists, so I read, but there’s the opportunity to learn a little about local culture and the interesting wines of Irouléguy...The warm welcome from Joselu & Jakline at Beilari seems an auspicious start to our long journey.

Rick of Rick and Peg have recently posted the comparison of the profiles on another threads titled Which Route from SJP. The start of the Napoleon is the steepest part of the two but the end of the Valcarlos is almost as steep. So 6 of one is an apt comparison.

Actually, I really enjoy Saint Jean. It´s certainly not a metropolis or a tiny village, but there is so much Basque history, wine, cheese, food and culture there. For what it´s worth!!

After checking into the Pilgrim's office, we had no idea where to stay. We went a few doors down to 30, rue de la Citadelle, the Gite Buen Camino.

We had a group of 6, so negotiated a decent rate, I think it was 15 euros, and my 11 year old daughter was half price. Breakfast included.

Marie Estelle was an awesome host. Very nice and charming, nice rooms and beds. Beware the slippery and creaky wood floors!

Breakfast in the morning was very decent. Marie Estelle was an awesome Camino Mom, giving lots of advice, warnings, and encouragement to her nervous wards. She is awesome!

Definitely staying there next Camino.
