hi walking finisterre muxia. 22march 2013 with 18year old granson who is asthmatic. we are doing two to three walks a week about 5 to 7 miles with light backpack at the moment. started to think what to prepare for if he as a bad attack of asthma. will stay in private albergue will have the correct traval insurance any more ideas please. :?

I presume he would take his preventer and also some Ventolin with him. Carry it on the plane so that in the highly unlikely event of his pack going missing, he will still have required meds.
Will you take a phone? Get familiar with the Spanish emergency numbers. Know how to explain your problem in Spanish. Be comforted that your grandson is quite familiar with his condition and no doubt can read the signs easily - stop if he needs to, don't push him if his breathing is laboured.
Basically take the same precautions you would for a hike you go on at home.

For the record, I suffer from asthma at home, but whenever I travel out of Auckland it clears up completely. Beijing is the only place I've had trouble with it. Your grandson might be as lucky!

Hi John! I also use Ventolin and seretide at home in NSW but didn't have to use them when we were in Europe 4 years ago and we did lots of walking I will still take them with me when I start our Camino in late May early June this year just in case. The first 2 days will be a true test we are leaving from JPDP

I have asthma, and I live on the camino Frances. I have much less trouble here than I did in the USA; the medicines and treatments are identical.
If your boy has an attack, do what you would normally -- sit down, stay very calm, and phone 112 if an ambulance is needed. Be sure you have adequate insurance cover.
The word for "asthma" in Spanish is "asma," so no problem there!

I think you will be surprised at how well he does.
