My brother in law, Rob, and I were just starting the Camino Norte.

Just before we set off, we came across a gentleman with at least 2 thousand euros worth of photography equipment who was taking wildlife pictures. He graciously acquiesced to taking our inaugural picture using my phone.

This was the result!

While Rob could only afford 2 weeks on the Camino, I was determined to ensure that we ended as we began - :)

I'm reminded of a co-worker I had about 40 years ago who said his friends raved about his vacation pictures. Then he told me his secret. He would walk up to someone wearing two or three cameras around his neck and ask for a picture of the subject using his camera.

When I take photos of someone using their camera or smartphone, I ALWAYS ask them to check the result is okay. I would much rather have a do over than the alternative.

While working as a Pilgrim Office volunteer I do this many times each day. The LAST THING I want is that very important photo with their Compostela to be spoiled by bad technique.

That is also why I wear my big red foam clown nose.... That’s a whole other story...

Hi everyone -

Here’s a sample of one of Tom’s excellent photos, which he took of my family and me on 1 August this year. It was taken on the terrace at the Pilgrim Office which is a lovely spot for a photo.

From left - me, sister Fran, sister-in-law Eleanor and twin brothers Glen and Phil. The photo is precious to me as there hadn’t that many photos taken of us as a family even though we’d walked from St Jean. Along the Way we all walked at different paces so we weren’t together for photo opportunities most of the time.

And yes - we were all surprised and delighted at the sight of the big red foam clown nose!

Thanks Tom and Cheers from Oz everyone -

Great family photo, Jenny! I know Tom and he is amazing...I thought his "clown nose" was a joke, but apparently not! I wish someone would have taken a picture of him with wearing it! 😊

Cheers Chrissy! And thank you.

Tom sure is amazing - the effort and expertise he’s put into the volunteer role at the Pilgrim Office for the past six years is huge.

And the nose! We’ll have to put out the word amongst Forum members to get a shot of Tom and the famous nose when he’s volunteering at the Pilgrim Office next year!

Cheers from Oz -

I will remember to bring a nose when we meet in March. But those photos of me with the nose DO EXIST.

Many times, after I take photos, the person, family or group wants selfies or a group photo with me. In particular, our Korean and Chinese pilgrim friends (both PRC and ROC) are very keen on this.

I consider it all part of the prime directive to “welcome all pilgrims...period!”

Whew! That was close. Do not worry, one will turn up. As I do NOT do selfies, I have none. I just have the noses...

Each May, I top off my supply at my local Walgreens to support the Red Nose Day cancer charity. It's a win-win. In Spain, I end up wearing a couple out, and giving a dozen or more away to fascinated children who seek to grab mine. I also give them to pilgrims who ask nicely... They are always freely given. It is part of what I do when I volunteer.

As there is a choking hazard for kids under three years of age, the noses are wrapped and labeled with this warning. So, I always ask the age of the child and the parent for permission first. Then I show both parents and child how to squeeze the nose to put it on, as pulling it laterally will tear the foam - fast.

Funny thing though, most young boys want to play footie with the red noses using them as footballs. The girls want to wear them... Go figure!

While in Spain we had the impression that if something was round, half round, or once was round, the boys would kick it....

If someone asks me to use their phone to take a photo of them I always flip the camera and take a selfie of me looking puzzled before I take the correct photo... Usually I hear them laughing as I walk away.. the best time are when they don't laugh and I assume they haven't checked.. a little treat for when they get home and check through their phone 😃

It is very unfortunate that you have no visual
Memories of initial day of your departure. However, what a wonderful symbolic message that you walked with heart rather than with your brain! I’m the eternal optimist.

My wife is a specialist at photographic beheadings. She would have been in great demand during the French Revolution.

I have made several friends or at least acquaintances along the way taking pictures with the following Selfie Sandwich procedure:

1) ¿Puedo ayudar a tomar una foto de todos? Can I help take a picture of everyone?
2) Grandes sonrisas! Big smiles!

3) I take the 1st picture. I switch to selfie mode and take a silly pic of myself.🤪 Then, I switch back to normal.

4) Uno mas. One more.

5) I take another pic of the group, and return the phone. I ask them to look at the picture.

6) ¿Está bien la foto? Is the photo OK?

So my selfie is now sandwiched between their two pictures. Sometimes they check them all out. They look confused at first when they see my pic ... trying to figure out who it is🤔 ... it takes a minute for it to set in and the laughter to begin.😂🤣 Sometimes they just look at the last one, and I walk on. Later in the next town etc. they come over and say I know you ... I have your picture on my phone ... and we all have a laugh.😂🤣

Always ask a teenage girl to take your picture; they get it.
