Does anyone have experience renting a car in Portugal and dropping it off in Spain?
I will be in Porto Portugal and will be meeting up with friends walking the Camino Frances fron Sarria on Saturday June 30.
There are some longer public transportation options that get me to Sarria late in the evening. (example bus or train from Porto to Vigo then bus or train Vigo to Ourense then bus to Sarria). Drive time Porto to Sarria is about 3 hours. Lugo maybe a better drop off place.
Any advice on either car rental or public transportation is appreciated. I am trying to arrive by 6pm, if possible.
gracias!

You would need an international driving permit to rent a car or drive in Spain which we found out when we called to pick up the car we had reserved in advance through a US company. In the US you can get one from AAA.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Did you check the drop off fee for a one way cross-border car rental Portugal-Spain? This could be quite a surprise .... note that the fee can be "anywhere from €10 to €1,000 depending on rental specifics" and Portugal-Spain seems to be on the very expensive side of the scale!

Hi JoAnn,

I wanted to rent a car going the other way last summer and it was prohibitively expensive, like 400 euro for 1 day in the smallest possible car.

The coach to Santiago was comfortable (I say this as someone who hates taking long distance coach journeys in the UK) and only took a little longer than driving would. While Rome2Rio is generally excellent, I had a nightmare using it to plan this journey on my smartphone. Sounds like you may have done the research already but just in case website here . By the looks of it you'd have to leave on the 29th and spend the night in Santiago, but assuming you have the time I'd say the coach (20 euro) and accomdation would still be cheaper than car hire.

Good luck with the plans,

Rob.
