Direct phone connection to 112 for pilgrims in Lepoeder

This col is the most dangerous point of the Way of Santiago between Valcar them and the stop of Ibañeta. –

DNN. PAMPLONA Thursday, 17 of June of 2010 - 04:00 h. La Agency Navarre de Emergencias has commissioned a system of direct communications with SOS Navarre in the Lepoeder shelter for pilgrims located on the section of the Camino de Santiago between Valcar them and the stop of Ibañeta and constructed recently by the Government. The col is the most dangerous point of that section.

The device could only be used for emergencies situations and it solely allows the communications with the coordination centre. One activates after pressing a button installed inside the refuge. The cover is possible thanks to the network of transmitters TETRA of the leasehold Government.

After consulting to the City council of Valcar and the Firemen of the Park of Burguete, the Government of Navarre constructed the refuge of Izandorre so that the pilgrims can rest or take refuge because of rain or adverse meteorological conditions. It consists of two bunks, a drawer to keep rescue equipment at the winter time and a stove.

Rescue of a Bulgarian

Firemen of Burguete and Valcar with a helicopter and the Police worked on Tuesday in the search of a Bulgarian pilgrim who became lost on the first stage of the Camino de Santiago on the French route in the stage to Roncesvalles. He requested aid to the 19.00 hours and was located at 21.40 by the voluntary firemen of Valcar them in the French section.

William Marques,

Thank you for the translation but I'm still a bit confused. What do you mean by "col"... is this a term for "route?" Is this part of the Camino the most dangerous because it's all downhill on the S. Pyrenees? Or is it just dangerous on this stage of the Camino?

Did the Belgium man get lost due to weather conditions? Sorry for so many questions. I head for Roncevalles around June 25th.

Grazie~ Denise

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Transport luggage-passengers.
From airports to SJPP
Luggage from SJPP to Roncevalles
I think the translation col is better as pass i.e. the highest part of the route as Roncesvalles is down a little from the top on the Spanish side.

The Bulgarian got lost for reasons not explained. The route is clear so he may have taken a "shortcut" of his own. You may be right if fog/clouds disorientated him.

WM~ thank you. "Pass" makes sense considering the mountains, si?

I checked weather online and didn't see anything horrendous but you've reminded me now about the "fog." I've heard others mention visibility issues in that area but had forgotten all about it so thank you for that reminder/possibility as well!

Grazie~ Denise

Really quick work by the Search and Rescue squad. Notified at 7:00 pm, victim found at 9:40 pm.
Mobilizing and traveling to the search area takes time, although it is not too far from town to the pass.

When a victim has a cell phone, finding him is sometimes quite easy. The search vehicle turns on the siren and asks "Can you hear it?" If he can't hear it, they drive a little further. When they make that connection, the victim then walks towards the sound, unless he is injured or stranded on a ledge.

Whatever happened, the story had a happy ending.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
