I am escorting the Roll of Honour (Afghanistan) on Camino France on 20 May from SJPDP
The Roll of Honour details the 41 young Australians who died on Active Service in Afghanistan. In the centenary of the ANZAC’s, the Roll of Honour will be escorted to 41 prominent places and events around the World, laying 41 Poppies at each location.
I will depart Australia the day after Anzac day where the roll of honour will be handled by the deceased families at the SAS barracks in Swanbourne Perth Australia. After attending the Players championship at TPC Sawgrass in Florida where a high profile golfer will escort the ROH I will leave NYC and travel to Spain on the 18 May.
I am stepping off in SJPDP on the 20 May escorting the Roll of Honour (Afghanistan)
The Roll of Honour details the 41 young Australians who died on ...Active Service in Afghanistan. In the centenary of the ANZAC’s, the Roll of Honour will be escorted to 41 prominent places and events around the World, laying 41 Poppies at each location. To date, the Roll of Honour has, with architect of the Event, Brian Freeman, summited Mount Everest, ran from the Tip of Cape York to the southern most of Tasmania, including kayaking Bass Strait in Winter, crossed the Kokoda Trail, summited Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, sailed the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. It will continue its journey’s to the South Pole, the English Channel and battle sites of many of our Australian Soldiers through all theatres of War. My privilege, Mick McQueen, is a 890Km journey from the French Pyrenees to the Compostela de Santiago, where the Roll of Honour will be blessed in the cathedral before making the final journey to Finisterre and poppies laid in honour of these brave heroes. The names of the Fallen will then be attached to 41 individual Poppies and cast adrift on a foam capsule. I hope to meet and enjoy the company of people from all country's and walks of life to assist in making this a memorable journey for the departed. Thanks for all the info on these threads, being a 30 year Infantry veteran I have made only one demand on myself....Nothing camouflaged. Buen Camino !

I applaud your treatment of Veterans!

In contrast, I received my awards and decorations after the Vietnam War "postage due"! They failed to put the franking stamp on the envelope which would have made the postage free. The medals are in a drawer, but I framed the envelope.

Gratitude is often in the attention to detail. The best of luck on your detail.

Buen Camino.

Hi Mick -

Thanks so much for sharing the details of The Roll of Honour here on the Forum. As the daughter of a POW for three and a half years in Japan after the Fall of Singapore (my darling Dad Jim who was in the 8th Div Signals), your post has gone straight to my heart - I'm overwhelmed with respect and emotion with all that you, and others who've contributed to this wonderful project, have done and are doing - thank you.

We Aussies have so VERY much to be thankful for and I am so grateful to and proud of all our brave servicemen and women who've given their lives in conflict.

I'm starting out from Burgos around 4 June ... and will be walking really, really slowly ... you never know, we might meet somewhere on those magical and ancient paths. Do you have a estimated date when The Roll of Honour will be blessed in Santiago? I'd love to be there ... it will be a privilege. Also to be at Finisterre - gosh, what an honour that would be.

Buen Camino Mick - I hope to see you on The Way -

Cheers from Sydney -

Jenny

Cheers Mick and good on you, particularly as you've just had such a major operation that turned out to be a life and death situation. You were definitely meant to be doing this Camino.
I'll look out for you on those dates in Santiago and Finisterre.

Thanks.

We were warriors that's for sure. There was nothing wrong with us. Can't say the same for our leaders. Sad,
Thanks for giving me a reason. I now have something to dedicate my walk to. To all our veterans and their families. There are tons of homeless vets out there. About twice as many Viet vets have died from suicide than from the war itself. Today 22 veterans a day commit suicide not to mention those that have perished and still die from drugs and alcohol. God have mercy.

Is there a public facebook page or a blog for The Roll of Honour? A quick google search hasn't revealed anything specifically for this project. It would be terrific for Forum members to read about Mt Everest etc and to follow your Camino.

In the centenary of the ANZAC’s

Mick, hi from across the ditch.

I appreciate your primary focus is on the 41 Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan.

In the interest of the ANZAC spirit I ask you keep in mind the 10 New Zealanders who also made the ultimate sacrifice in that conflict.

Hi Mick Thanks for sharing. What a great tribute to remeber the fallen! Navy veteran - 37 years active service and still serving our wonderful country. I'll be remembering our 'fallen' on the Camino. Great tribute Mick. Hope you post a blog. Once again thanks for sharing. Lest we forget.
