Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
A taxi would cost a fortune. Train is lengthy, best bet may be a combination of buses and trains.

Hello eric,
There is no direct train from nice ville to st jean pied de port. The prices using a date of 11/07 ranged from €128.10 to €132.40. There is only 1 train a day with 2 changes.
Train departs nicecity at 0730 hr, arrives paris gare de lyon at 1311 hr train no idtgv 2902
Departs paris montparnasse 1 et 2at 1425 hr, arrives bayonne at 1932 hr. train no tgv 8541
Depart bayonne 2110 hr, arrives st jean pied de port at 2229 hr. train no ter 67337

Please note you have to change station in paris from gare de lyon to gare montparnasse. Also the first 2 train are seat reserved. However the bayonne to sjpdp, no seat reservation is required.

Good luck and buen camino.

a VERY roundabout route.

Last time I did that route, I walked .. :D ...

... but really, the train route is Nice > Marseille > Toulouse > Tarbes > Pau > Lourdes > Bayonne > SJPP

The trains between Toulouse and SJPP will be slow and local, but reserving them in advance would be both pointless and be less flexible than just making your way to Toulouse first then arranging the rest of the trip from there.

Arriving at SJPP at 22:30 is NOT a good idea.

---

If I were in your position, Eric, I'd get myself to Nice for the business, then arrange for the trip to Toulouse when most appropriate for you.

At Toulouse, look at the arrival time, then make whichever part of the journey towards Bayonne would let you arrive not too late for a hotel in Tarbes or Pau or wherever -- or maybe get yourself to Lourdes for the evening.

Next day, get an early train towards SJPP for a much more sensible arrival time there than 22:30 :)

---

Alternatively, Nice > Bordeaux by an early plane, then train from there to SJPP. (there's no direct flight from Nice to Biarritz)
