How to get from the Le Puy Route to the Northern Route at Ir

Bill Walker

New Member
We are walking from Le Puy southwards. We then want to get on the Camino del Norte. Does anybody know the best way to get to Irun from the Le Puy route. Are there buses from St. Jean Pied de Port? Or is there an intersection where we can leave the Le Puy route and turn west to get to Irun?

Thanks,

A lot turned and went to St Palais , Bill , when we walked Le Puy.
Its just before STPDP
I am positive from there you can access Irun/Bayonne/ Biarritz.
Have mentioned the days to complete under your other heading .....pushing at 67
On the Le Puy route many take the variance to Rocamadour , a lovely village overlooking the Lot river.
The early part from Irun to Bilbao is very challenging / you will not get more than the 20-25km/day mate.

Hi Bill
From SJPDP you can take a train to bayonne. Change in bayonne to the train to Hendaye, which is only a bridge away from irun (you can walk to irun or take another little train to irun centre and then walk to the albergue :). Costs are about 15 euro.
Or you could walk from SJPDP to irun on the gr10, a marked route through the pyrenees. Will take you about 4 days.
Or walk from SJPDP to roncesvalles in spain and continue on the gr11 (not sure how long that would take
Buen camino!

Hello Bill,

Yes, there's a way that link Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Irún, unfortunately the only guidebook I know about this way is in french : http://www.guides-cheminsdecompostelle. ... irun-1.htm You can find this book in Saint-Jean.

Otherwise, you can take the train...

Hope that helps !

Buen Camino !

Elevation map shows this is really steep! What’s the best way from downtown Hondarribia up there? Then wish me luck on the Purgatorio—I am a nervous wreck.
My group of six arrives in Irun on May 20 and we're starting our Camino on May 21. Since it's the beginning of the busy season, I'm wondering if we should order trekking poles from Amazon Espana...
