I know. I am just having first day jitters.Welcome to the forum, @Wanderingfriend. Lucky you to be in Spain and ready to start walking the Camino! Do not worry as I'm sure you will be seeing pilgrims before long and have many opportunities to interact if you so choose.
Many of us would love to be in your shoes right now!
Yes, cities are inhabited by city people - very difficult to spot another pilgrim - so once you've done the touristy stuff it's great to get out of them. Then you'll meet the other pilgrims, no problem. Buen Camino, I enjoy the walk out of Logrono, it's really nice.It is so strange, I arrived in Logrono this afternoon and went to the square by the big church, I didn’t see one person who
looked like a pilgrim. So strange. Am I out here all by myself?
Don't be worried, I don't remember it being a problem. Is the way out well marked? Kinda nervous about this.
If the sun’s on your back in the morning, you’re going the right way.Is the way out well marked? Kinda nervous about this.
Most of the apps with maps - Wise Pilgrim, Buen Camino, Camino Ninja, etc. work offline. You do need to download their files while you are online though. However, you might want to get you phone set up while you are in a larger city.It is Sunday so I can’t get my cell phone set up. I am debating about waiting here and getting my phone set up, then leave closer to noon. I have a reservation. Otherwise I can’t use the apps without data, correct?
Yes. I think I will stay here and get my phone working brfore I take off tomorrow, otherwise it’ll be a few days. I will get I later than I had hoped with the heat, but, hey…all I have is time! Most of the apps with maps - Wise Pilgrim, Buen Camino, Camino Ninja, etc. work offline. The best asset to have!all I have is time!
Many people manage using just wifi along the way.Leaving Logrono tomorrow. A short walking day to Navarrette just to acclimatize myself. I plan on strolling. I may stop at a phone store out of town to try to get a data plan. I am actually wondering if I need it. Mostly I have made calls on what’s app, or messenger for free while on wifi. If I had an emergency I can just use my Canadian plan and pay $15 for the day. Any thoughts,
I am one who has only used wifi on my Caminos along with a similar messaging app to Whatsapp for family chats, and have managed just fine. I have never purchased any overseas phone plan. No right or wrong here; it's what we individually are comfortable with and meets our particular needs while we are away from home. Many people manage using just wifi along the way.
Turn off the cellular setting and/or put the phone on airplane mode so you don’t accidentally use your Cdn cell plan.
I’ve always managed with just local wifi in Europe. Nearly every bar has it. I think there might be one or two nights only where it wasn’t available.
Please give us updates of your journey as I’ll be starting in Logrono soon too
This is a well marked route and I am sure there will be other Pilgrims. You really will not need any apps.It is Sunday so I can’t get my cell phone set up. I ate there in May 2019 (good quality but haven't a clue what it was as I couldn't translate the menu) as I wanted to eat earlier than my accommodation was going to provide. Perhaps it was me but I couldn't find too many places open, it was raining so I didn't go too far.The first few times I found getting out of Logroño through the city streets required watching carefully for the arrows (and I can never pass the Drunken Duck without stopping for a cafe!) but all that ceases once onto the walking path to the lake.
I think you can do much better than that using Orange or vodafone. Get a sim card from them and you will get a new Spanish number. I call my wife and kids on Whatsapp or Facetime. My wife can call my from our home internet phone, No one has to change your number as Whatsapp automatically does it. You can get really good calling plans with loads of data for 15 or 20 euros. Having the ability to call ahead to see if an albergue is open or to make a reservation sure comes in handy.Leaving Logrono tomorrow. A short walking day to Navarrette just to acclimatize myself. I know that street well and have eaten in a few restaurants and they were all good. I too love Logrono. It is a city but has a much more laid back feeling to me than Burgos, Leon, Santander, Bilboa etc. I really like Logrono alot.I loved Logrono and its pretty main street; quiet in the afternoon, but festive with locals in the early evening on a lovely spring day. I was treated to my favorite meal on that Camino for my birthday...it was excellent, although unfortunately I do not recall the restaurant.

Totally agree, it's much more laid back, and In addition, on that favorite street we stumbled (no pun intendedI know that street well and have eaten in a few restaurants and they were all good. Can't beat that with a stick!!!!Totally agree, it's much more laid back, and In addition, on that favorite street we stumbled (no pun intended) on a bar with outside seating that sold beer and wine for only 1 euro each!
Edit- We went back two years later in 2017 and it was still a buck.
