Ive walked it in the offseason; now am walking it July/August-- will I have fun? Or will the heat and crowds make the walk unbearable?

July and August are the busiest and hottest time, so it depends on what you think is fun! Both will be challenging, so if you want a more relaxed and hospitable atmosphere, September or October would be better.

Have fun!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Grayland, you made the same comment that I wanted to make!

htgute - What do you mean by "fun"?? Anne

we greatly enjoyed it, but the last section from Sarrias became a race to get a bed, we bought a tent at this point and free camped till we got to Santiago, and then used the refuges till Finisterra. You might think about carrying a very small tent (sub 1 kilo) as an insurance policy against full refuges, and also some refuges allow you to camp in the garden, which is the best way to get a decent nights sleep!

Don't forget that World Youth Day is in Madrid in August and there will be groups of young people from around the world adding parts of the Camino to their trip, either before or after. I imagine crowds will be larger than usual.

I began my walk last year on the day of st. james and found that the first half was not as crowded as I would have expected reading everything on here....well then again I'm from nyc so it takes a lot of people for me to consider something crowded. I usually left with the early bunch from the albergues at around 5 am and did not encounter too many crowds of people. when i was met with crowds i don't even think i thought of it in any negative way since everyone is a pilgrim....thought it does suck that it becomes harder to find a bed as you get closer to sdc
