La Coruña US Consulate Office Possible Closing

Hi everyone, the US Inspector General has recommended that the US Consulate office in La Coruña be closed. La Coruña is a 45-minute train ride from Santiago.

If they close this office, the closest Consulate/Embassy is in Madrid, 370 miles (600 km) away. This closing would prove to be a hardship for us American expats who live in the north of Spain. However, I was also thinking of American pilgrims who finish in Santiago and need attention from the Consulate (with lost passports, etc). It seems like the number of American pilgrims is only going to keep growing, not dwindle, and so a US Consulate office in La Coruña seems like it will become even more necessary as the years go on, not less.

Also affected would be citizens of other countries (Spain and otherwise) who live in Galicia, Asturias, and Cantabria and who need US visas, US notary services, or US passport services from the US Consulate.

The La Coruña office has contacted us to ask for help to keep them open, and we were wondering if the members of this forum could help, too, as this decision would affect you if you were an American pilgrim in Santiago and needed assistance from the US Consulate, OR if you were a citizen of another country and needed their services. I've attached a petition to this post that you can print out. No matter what one's citizenship is or possible need for US Consulate services, anyone over 18 years old can sign the petition to keep the office open. Please send it to the La Coruña office itself at:

US Consular Agency
C/ Juana de Vega, 8 - 5 Izq.
15003 La Coruña
SPAIN

Thanks!! Let me know if you have any questions.
