is Vilafranca del Bierzo a good place to stop in?

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
If you stay in Villafranca del Bierzo and you wish a bit of private comfort and/or a very good reasonably priced meal with delicious local wine do stop at the Hostal de la Puerta del Perdon. Located on the CF opposite the castle it is a VERY comfortable stop especially on a cold winter night!

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Thanks hopefully we can have lunch there

There are several very nice places to eat right there on the Plaza Mayor.... Wonderful places to sit for an hour and watch the world go by.... And several very nice places to stay, too.... Next time I pass through I want to check out the new San Nicolas el Real!

I've always enjoyed Villafranca, which peregrinos seem constantly to shortchange in their hurry to climb up into the mountains..... Sure, there's the Puerta del Perdon. But Villafranca also houses the forgotten tomb of a 'Doctor of the Church'! Don't run across one of those every day, eh?!... And for you history buffs: I've been working my way through Sir Charles Oman's multi-volume history of the Napoleonic Peninsular War, and poor Villafranca del Bierzo must surely have been the most raped-and-pillaged town in all of Spain.

Definately worth a bit of a walk about.... But go easy on the rape-and-pillage, OK? ;)

I stayed there last year, we got a room, not the dormitory. It was really great

Albergue Leo Villafranca. Another post on here about it but I can't do a link.

Agree entirely.
And there is the church of San Francisco, one of my favorites of the entire Camino Frances. This photo was taken there during Semana Santa, of the Blessed Virgin before she was to go out for the procession.
