Mercado de Abastos in Santiago de Compostela

I have mentioned the wonderful market in Mercado de Abastos in Santiago – Abastos? In Palestinian Arabic basta means a market stall in classical Arabic supplies –I have mentioned this several times but have had few responses so will try again. The market is a cheerful place located to the East of the Cathedral, above Rua da Virxe de Cerca, strategically placed between two churches of Santo Domingo and San Fiz de Solovio so there is always a watchful eye! It's a modern building with a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g you might possibly desire, the freshest fruits and vegetables, herbs and spices, butchers selling meat, sausages, all sorts of jamon, cheeses of all types, and fresh seafood from toothy merluza (hake) to dorada (sea bream) to rodaballo (turbot) to whole octopus being prepared on the spot for home cooking (not for the weak hearted!) or cooking there in the pot!, salt dried bacalao (attention Korean brethren very good for playing badminton; English may prefer tennis or cricket and Americans for baseball!) and…shh don't tell the rabbi… glorious shellfish in all sorts sizes shapes and colors. All offered at a much better price than any restaurant or supermarket in Santiago that I know of! Not convinced? Two of the best tapas bars in town , Abastos 2.0 Rúa das Ameas 13, and Café de Altamira Rua de Ameas, 9 are located right there!Visit for the fun go to save money but put it on your must see list.

It's not that they sell the stuff, they cook it for you! You buy your fish, seafood, in the morning and drop it off at one off the stalls that works as a restaurant. Tell the, what time you want to come back to eat there. You then biu your wine and sides to go with what you bought earlier that day.

Yes yes yes my favourite place to eat in Santiago. Awesome wine bar - they cook shellfish with the steam from the coffee machine.

I happened upon the market this year as I wandered around Santiago. A true gem. It gave a different perspective to Santiago than you see just hanging around the cathedral.

It's a great market, when we are in Santiago we sleep in the hotel de Altamira agros the market. We love this hotel because they also have great food.

I love that market.
It's the only place in the world I know where I can get the housecleaning smocks I love to wear when cooking and doing housework and yardwork.
I don't know what they're called, but I love those things!
They're polyester, wash up nice, and I try to get 2 or 3 every year.
I often give them away to people who say, "Oh! Where'd you get that!?"

They look something like the photo here, but come in various colors and patterns.
Ugly, but functional.
I love the big pockets so I can carry around my iPhone if I'm outside.
