Monastery in Sarria

I cannot find a thing about whether this monastery offers pilgrim services, vespers, etc... I found something about its history and plenty about the albergue. I'm trying to decide if this monastery should be on my list of places to stay overnight. It looks amazing but if it is just a place to sleep, I may not make it a priority to stop in Sarria.

These days it is just a place to sleep. There is no pilgrim mass or similar (religious) services.

I've not stayed here, preferring the huge bathtubs at the Alfonso IX at the bottom of the hill, but two of the Tripadvisor reports refer to the fact that mass and other services are at the adjoining church. This article (http://elprogreso.galiciae.com/noticia/110780/un-convento-con-historia) provides us with a bit of background on the Mercederians who run the place. It's at the far end of Sarria, just where the Camino leads out of the town, and saves trudging up the hill by Santa Marina's church/

Ok this is good to know. The walk from Samos to Sarria is very short and I have limited days so it needed to be really worth it for me to stay there. I'll just stop in if the church is open for a bit of quiet time and then move on.

i ran into mass there once in the morning, very pretty. no vespers though. if you are avoiding the comforts that come with private rooms and hotels, then yes, it's a pretty cool place and you are 5 minutes from the cute historic centre at the top of teh hill.

on that note, in my opinion staying in sarria is much more interesting than the options between there and portomarín. suppose it depends on what you are looking for...

Walk from Samos, visit Sarria, then walk on and stay in Barbadelo or Morgade. That's what I'm planning to do.

samos is much more interesting, and a pretty walk to sarria from there too! you could even make it to portomarín if you left early enough. if not, mercado's albergue looks nice, though i haven't stayed there.

I've stayed at the monastery several times. If you go next door to the church proper you will see a bell cord. Give it a jingle. I was met by a priest who welcomed me and gave an informal tour. There is daily Mass.
If you carry on the Hostel Casa Barbadelo in Rente is a winner.

I stayed in the Samos Monastery Albergue last year. There was an evening Mass in the Monastery Church with Gregorian chants by the monks before the service. After the service each pilgrim was called forward for a blessing and given a rosary.

If you are planning to stay at the albergue by the monastery, be prepared to wear all your warm clothes to bed! They also have blankets.

In 2009 I went to mass here and had my passport stamped by the priest. The church was of interest. I didn't know they offered accommodation. Would be good to know if they do and what the conditions are like.

I've done exactly this a couple of times: I love Samos, and after that Casa Barbadelo is one of my favourite stops - a great swimming pool, good food (even a bacon and egg breakfast option) and the water pressure in the bathrooms just about blasts you out of the shower! And it also offsets you from any crowds leaving Sarria as you pass through.

Thanks for good info. I've been wondering about whether to go the Samos route this next time. The first time I walked I took the other route and it was one of my favourite days. An absolutely glorious walk. It was green and peaceful and beautiful, through tiny villages, up and down hills and along woodland paths. Very few services in terms of cafes and bars but its not that far so thats OK and from memory there was a vending machine in one village. Probably these happy memories are all the more reason to take the Samos route.

We have stayed in Sarria in May 2016, refusing the extremaly cold and army-liked albergue within the monastery building. "Our" was a private one just on the opposite side of the street, looking from the monastery albergue´s door. The price difference were almost nothing. We had a good sleep in small rooms, good shower possibilities and nice dinner. There was an evening Mass, no blessing that day. Interesting guidance in the Monastery. Definitely worth to make a stop in Sarria! This was in fact the last guite place, from there mass pilgrimage starts (=100 km from SdC)

There is a mass at the monastery at 19:00. I attended in June 16. Also at 14:00 One of the Monks give a guided tour of the monastery for, if i remember 3€ . Worth every cent. i stayed at a small pension opposite the main door for the monastery albergue

Awesome. It's back on my list of places to stay. When I first started dreaming about the Camino, I saw a picture of the outdoor walking areas in the monastery and fell in love. I just want to walk those halls.

I'm cycling Camino Frances now, and more than 3 peregrinos have advised to try stay in Samos Mobastery for the experience.

Do you know if they accept cyclists?
