I do not have the 30-40 days it would take to walk the whole Camino Frances.

Is it possible to start in Burgos, or Leon?

If so, what is the best airport to fly into. Once you arrive, is there a train/bus that can get you near the trail?

Also, I will have roughly 14-17 days avaialble for travel/rest/weather. Where is a ggood starting point on the Camino Frances.

Do you need a certain passport, or will the american passport do for the stamps you aquire to get your certificate?

Any information for a newbie would be great. I just ordered the book "A Pilgrim’s Guide to the Camino de Santiago"

It is about two weeks from Leon to Santiago.

Most flights go to Madrid. It is easy to get from there to most major cities in Spain on a train or bus.

Your thoughts on Leon are good. You get to start with a relatively easy three days.

You will get the sellos (stamps) in a separate document, the credential, not your official passport. You can get it in advance, or when you arrive in Spain. You will need your U.S. passport to travel to and from Spain, and you will be asked for it in many accommodations. Keep it in a waterproof protector; it gets wet in Spain!!

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Good advice from Falcon. If you're coming from the States you're very likely to fly into Madrid. There is an airport in Leon but it's very small with few flights, and the extra cost to connect from Madrid or Barcelona would be significant even if there was a convenient flight.

There's a direct bus from Madrid Barajas Airport to Leon (http://www.alsa.es). If you prefer the train, the airport is on the Metro (subway/underground) system, so you can get to the appropriate station for the train on to Leon fairly easily.

It might just depend what time your flight arrives in Madrid as to which is the best option.

Buen Camino!
