Numbers on the Camino - the latest

Nunca se camina solo
Hola

I´ve just posted the up to date position as at 4pm today. Numbers are up considerably. However the pundits here are predicting that they have peaked and whilst there are busy times ahead with the papal visit maybe it will calm down. We shall see.

I was intrigued by the feelings that numbers may not have risen as much as expected from the starting points distant from Santiago. I´ve done a comparison over three years for the period 1st January - 31st August. The results are very interesting.

Hi,

I read with interest the numbers and where the pilgrims started from. As I'm walking the Madrid route in April, I was curious that they have two categories for starting from Madrid. 'Madrid' and 'Madrid-CF'. I gather the latter refers to those who continue on the Frances, is the other category for those who stop in Sahagun? And then they would travel to SdC to get a compestela??

Today there were 177 pilgrims; the first day this year with more than 100.

Useless information - my analysis of the figures by nationality taking an average of the past 20 years against last year shows a rises and falls in the percentages as follows:

Number of Pilgrims - Up till 2009 - 2010
Spain 66% 52%
France 5% 5%
Germany 7% 10%
Italy 5% 7%
Portugal 2% 3%
Rest of Europe 8% 12%
North America 3% 4%
South America 2% 4%
Oceana 1% 1%
Asia 1% 1%

Total may not add up to 100% due to rounding up and down,

Hi - What is "meant" to happen in the Office is that pilgrims starting from their homes in Madrid go into the Madrid category and all others who walk from Madrid and join the Camino Frances at Sahagun and then continue on to Santiago. However there is no great reliability that this happens everytime as it is very easy to simply click on Madrid on the drop down list rather than Madrid - CF.It seems to me that the number of pilgrims who most likely walked the Madrid route to Sahagun and onward to Santiago is the total of the two categories.

However if someone stopped in Sahagun and got the train to Santiago they would not qualify for a Compostela as they had not walked the last 100 kms continuously.

Regards

John

Sorry John, of course, momentarily forgot the 100km requirement for the compostela. Thanks for answering.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Hi

Anyone know when the fault with the February statistics from the pilgrims office will be ironed out.

Mucho Gracias

Mike
