pillow? - sounds vain but...

Are there pillows available while staying in the alberques? One of us has a bad neck on occasion - not that we will pack a full size pillow but may try an inflated??

I can't recall never having a pillow. But what I do is carry a pillow case, and if there were to be no pillow, I would stuff the pillow case with some of my clothes and use that as a pillow. I seem to recall doing that one time, but can't remember for sure.

I'm not comfortable with inflatables but I am taking a small, stuffable, camp pillow that I have trimmed to a small size. I see that many places have pillows but I enjoy my squishy one. It's a small indulgence that takes up little weight and space. When packed it's about the size of an orange. We all have our little luxuries.

To be a little more specific, I use packing cubes for my clothes. One for pants, one for shirts, and one for other clothes. I just inserted some of these into the pillow case. The structure of the packing cubes helped with the firmness of the pillow.

OK! I do have 3 of these for each of us - good thinking! and if my kiddos allow me I just may end up with a king-size pillow

I suffer from back pain, but what matters to me most in albergues is basi hygene. I now bring a pillow case, and can always stuff it with sweaters and other items I have with me. Not perfect, but so be it. After all, we all like a different pillow.

To answer the original post, it varies, and there won't always be pillows. I have gotten by with some of the approaches already described, but this year I was researching options for a camping trip with my granddaughter, and found an inflatable pillow made using a modern, light fabric. The one I bought is from Exped but there are others on the market. This one weighs about 50gm in a carry bag.

My husband carried a pillow. He popped discs in his neck a few years ago and he is very picky about pillows and he is a crabby whiny-pus when he doesn't sleep well . The pillow was mandatory or I wouldn't walk with him! But unless you have special concerns there would be no need to carry a pillow -- a case would be useful as others have pointed out. Liz
